Jaunty Flyer
This looks a decent novices’ hurdle, as you’d expect at this meeting, but hopefully Jaunty Flyer can be competitive. I don’t know a lot about him at the moment but he certainly looks a promising horse, having won his bumper at Exeter well on good ground – and I expect it be good ground here, too – and hopefully he will go well on his first start for his new yard.
Champagne City
I rode him when he won all three of his starts in the summer and this is his first run after a break. He is ready for this and I think the more strongly-run nature of handicaps will play to his strengths. He certainly has a lot scope for improvement and it is just a matter of whether his relative inexperience will count against him here, But conditions will suit, and I think he has done well for his break since winning at Stratford in July. Hopefully, he is weighted to take a hand, too.
Sumkindofking
He won his bumper and novice at the start of last season – his bumper win came here on good ground – and then ran some good races in defeat on going a little bit too soft for him on occasions. I think he is fairly treated off a mark of 129 and I think Chepstow on good going will suit him ideally, and the trip isn’t an issue either.
Bigbadjohn
This will be the first time I have ridden him but he looks to have a fair bit going for him in what is obviously a very competitive handicap. This is his first run since he was pulled up at the Festival last season but he ran well first time out in that campaign and went on to win twice and finish second to a certain Thistlecrack at Newbury. He looks on a fair mark and 3m on good ground round here should suit.
