Carabao Cup final preview: Liverpool vs Newcastle

Carabao Cup final preview: Liverpool vs Newcastle

It’s been a bad couple of days for Liverpool. But the week could yet end on a more upbeat note for Arne Slot and co at Wembley. Even if Newcastle fans will hope to see the Merseyside team let a second trophy slip from their grasp on Sunday.

It’s fair to say the Magpies have been waiting for Cup success of their own for a while now – 70 years, to be precise.

Liverpool are without Alexander-Arnold

Reigning Carabao Cup holders Liverpool may well be able to dust themselves off and focus on the job at hand as they look to win this prize for a record 11th time.

But Newcastle coach Eddie Howe might just have caught the Reds at a good time. Liverpool will be without the influential Trent Alexander Arnold, injured in the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this week.

But Newcastle are also missing an important player, with Anthony Gordon missing out after receiving a red card in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton. Lewis Hall and Sven Botman are both absent for the Magpies, too.

While Liverpool have undoubtedly been the best side in English football this season, Newcastle have also impressed, beating Arsenal 4-0 across two legs in the semi-final for this competition.

When these sides met earlier this season in the Premier League, Liverpool won comfortably enough at Anfield by a 2-0 scoreline; before that, back in December Newcastle held Slot’s side 3-3 at St James’ Park.

Isak’s contribution could be crucial

Liverpool are understandably favourites; but Alexander Isak’s contribution could be crucial. The Swedish striker has been monumental for Newcastle, and comes into this game with three goals in his last three appearances.

He scored against Liverpool in the 3-3 draw earlier this season, too. Isak is 17/10 to score at any time.

Liverpool have their own talismanic striker in Mo Salah of course. The Egyptian King’s future at Anfield is still in question, but if this season is his swansong he’s going out in style. Salah is just 41/50 to find the net.

You could also choose to back Liverpool to win and Salah to score in a double at 27/20. Not exactly a leftfield pick, true – but one that does seem to have a very decent chance of coming off.
