Champions League final betting preview: Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich

Every step of the way in this Champions League campaign, Paris Saint-Germain have proved the doubters wrong. Now, as they face a Bayern Munich side that have shown themselves to be literally unbeatable up to this point, is it finally PSG’s time? Find all the Latest Champions League betting here.

On Sunday night at Lisbon’s Estadio da Luz, the two teams meet in the final; Munich are seeking their sixth Champions League trophy and their first since 2013, while PSG are aiming to win this tournament for the first time in their 50-year history.

To do so, the French side’s expensively assembled array of superstars must overcome a Bayern side that was put together for a comparatively miniscule £80 million – astonishing, when you consider Neymar alone cost the French team £200m.

Yet while players like Robert Lewandowksi and David Alaba might not have the panache of, say, Kylian Mbappe, their excellence is not in doubt. Serge Gnabry is like a different player, compared to the man who once turned out (occasionally) for West Brom; Thomas Muller remains scruffily spectacular – and recent signing Alphonso Davies’ looks like a world-beater whenever he goes forward.

If Bayern have fewer galactico-style performers, they surely have a greater team unity; since Hansi Flick took charge back in November 2019, Bayern have suffered just two defeats in all competitions, both coming within the new coach’s opening month in charge.

As for Paris Saint-Germain, while Thomas Tuchel’s team have dominated domestically, this is their first time in a Champions League final. Barring a bizarrely off-kilter performance from the German champions, Bayern are the overwhelmingly likely winners here.

It’s true that a team with top quality players always has a chance, even against the most fearsome opposition. Neymar and Mbappe are two such players, both brimming with ingenuity and flamboyance. A moment of magic might win the day for PSG; but it’s surely, surely more likely that the side that swatted Barca aside 8-2 can keep Thomas Tuchel’s team at bay, no?

In any case, with two sets of superior teams offering a wealth of attacking ability, this is a final that might just live up to the hype. Even leaving aside the Barca result, Bayern have scored three or more goals in all but one of their Champions League games this season. They fired seven past Spurs, famously, and hit six past Red Star Belgrade without conceding back in November.

PSG have been less extravagant, but they did put three past Real Madrid way back in September, plus 5-0 drubbings of Club Brugge and Galatasaray. There’s always the possibility that a final becomes a bit of a damp squib, with neither team willing to commit – but this one at least has the ingredients to be a match to remember.

PSG are 11/5 to win this one, with Bayern 27/25 shots, and the draw available at 3/1 if you think the two sides won’t be able to decide this in 90 minutes. I can’t look past Bayern. It’s difficult not to state the obvious and back Lewandowski to score here too; the guy’s numbers are ridiculous, with 15 goals in the Champions League alone this season. He needs two more to match Cristiano Ronaldo’s record, and while that’s not going to be his chief concern on Sunday, you can bet he’s not unaware of it…

Lewandowski is 4/6 to score at any time. Alternatively, you can back him at 19/5 to score two goals or more in our Player Goals market.
