The Champions League returns – and Newcastle return to Europe’s most prestigious club competition for the first time in 20 years. Are Eddie Howe’s side set for a good run in this campaign?
The Magpies broke a run of three straight defeats in the Prem when they beat Brentford at the weekend. Now they look to make a statement against a Milan side who suffered a 5-1 defeat to their fiercest rivals Inter at the weekend.
Sandro Tonali helped Milan lift the Serie A title in 2022, but this time he’ll be playing for the visitors as Newcastle hit the San Siro.
According to the traders, there’s little to separate the two sides; but while Newcastle may be lacking recent experience in this competition, they surely have the personnel to perform well.
Last year at this stage of the competition, the Italian side were beaten at home by a Chelsea team who had already shown early signs of vulnerability elsewhere.
Stefano Pioli’s side could be heading for another defeat on home turf this week; Alexander Isak, who was rested against Brentford, could star for the visitors here.
Newcastle are 33/20 to win, with Isak 11/5 to find the net.
Man City vs Red Star Belgrade
Man City have barely put a foot wrong in the early stages of this season, winning their first five Premier League games to suggest everyone else is playing for runner-up position.
City are the reigning Champions League champions, of course, and the favourites to win this year’s competition at 9/4. Whether Pep can pull off back-to-back CL glory, it’s virtually impossible to look past a home win this week as City play host to Serbian side Red Star Belgrade.
Not that you’ll necessarily want to back that outcome, with City hefty odds-on favourites with the traders. Though Red Star are former winners of the European Cup, the famous old club will surely struggle to make it out of the group stage here.
Backing over 3.5 goals by Man City at Evens could be worth a look; the Manchester side beat FC Copenhagen 5-0 at home in the group stage last year, and leathered RB Leipzig 7-0 in the knockout stage, again at the Etihad. It wouldn’t be a shock to see City rack up a few on Tuesday night.
