Euros preview: Thursday’s action including Denmark vs England
Slovenia vs Serbia
After a 1-1 draw against Denmark in their opening game, Slovenia could give themselves a real chance of qualification with victory against Serbia.
But perhaps the likes of Dusan Vlahovic and Aleksandar Mitrovic will demonstrate the Serbs’ quality, after an opening game against England that proved more of a showcase for Serbia’s physical approach.
For Slovenia, Benjamin Sesko remains a threat; he hit the woodwork against the Danes in his previous match. And Sesko has seven goals in his last seven appearances for RB Leipzig.
In the run-up to the match, Serbia coach Dragan Stojkovic sounded bullish, saying “we’re going to do whatever we can against Slovenia – we have to win that.”
If the team follow through on those intentions, this could be an entertaining watch, both sides going all out to take the spoils. BTTS at 17/20 looks a decent possibility; of the potential scorers, Sesko could be worth backing to find the net at 14/5.
Denmark vs England
England can progress to the last 16 with victory against Denmark on Thursday night at the Frankfurt Arena. But can the Scandinavian side prevent Gareth Southgate and co from landing that second win, after the Three Lions beat Serbia in the opening game?
Hopefully Harry Kane will enjoy more than the two touches he mustered against the Serbs in the first half last time out; it would be great to see Phil Foden offer a more telling contribution against the Danes, too.
Then again, maybe Jude Bellingham can run the show once more; and maybe Gareth Southgate even knows what he’s doing.
Lots of maybes. Maybe we’re even being a little bit overly critical, given England did win that opener 1-0 over the Serbs. Still, it would be great to see a slightly more entertaining performance against the Danes on Thursday.
Will we get it? Kasper Hjulmand’s side drew their opening game 1-1 against Slovenia. On the basis of the Three Lions’ previous performance, there’s a possibility this could wind up ending in a stalemate too.
The sides have met three times in the last five years. As well as England’s 2-1 win at the last Euros, Denmark nicked a 1-0 win at Wembley in October 2020 (after Harry Maguire was sent off), with the reverse fixture having ended goalless a month earlier.
If Southgate’s side are to win here, they’ll need to buck a trend too; England have never won their opening two matches at the Euros, surprisingly.
Denmark don’t necessarily offer a massive threat themselves, however. They’ve won just one of the last six group stage games in the Euros, losing four and drawing one – the victory came against Russia.
Whatever the outcome, England fans crying out for a thriller may be left disappointed. A stalemate certainly isn’t the result England fans have in mind, but don’t rule it out – the draw can be backed at 11/4.
If you’re keen for something more positive, Bellingham is 6/1 to open the scoring, as he did in the previous match against Serbia.
Spain vs Italy
Each of these sides won their opening games. Spain blasted Croatia aside 3-0, as Italy fought back against Albania to win 2-1, having gone behind in the first minute.
Italy are reigning champions, while Spain look capable of progressing deep into the tournament.
This could be an encounter with plenty of goalmouth action then; backing BTTS and over 2.5 goals in a double at 29/20 looks like a decent approach.
