Euros preview: Tuesday’s action including Portugal vs Czech Republic
Turkey vs Georgia
Turkey are winless in their last five matches, and were spanked 6-1 by Austria back in March. But Vincenzo Montella’s side will be hopeful of getting off to a winning start against the lowest ranked team in the tournament.
Then again, Georgia might be underdogs but they did see off Greece and Luxembourg – to reach the Euros for the first time in their history.
Expectations around Willy Sagnol’s team may not be high. But the side can call upon the talents of Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
The 23-year-old scored 11 goals in Serie A last season, and is undoubtedly Georgia’s star. Can he give Turkey a reality check on Tuesday? Kvaratskhelia is 18/5 to find the net.
Otherwise, expecting two players to find the net for Georgia may sound optimistic – but it could nonetheless be worth taking a chance on Georgia’s Georges Mikautadze continuing to shine.
On loan from Ajax, Mikautadze has eight goals in his last seven appearances for Ligue 1 side Metz; he’s 4/1 to score at the Dortmund Stadium.
The Turks have a promising young talent of their own in Arda Guler; the 19-year-old moved to Real Madrid in the summer of 2023, and has scored five goals in his last five appearances for the Spanish giants. Guler is 17/5 to score.
Portugal vs Czech Republic
There are plenty who believe Portugal could go all the way here. The side warmed up for the Euros by putting three past Ireland in a friendly last week – with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice.
Yes, the 39-year-old is still a significant part of the Portuguese set-up. Manager Roberto Martinez doesn’t appear to be concerned with easing the aging star out of the side. But with or without Ronaldo, this Portugal side is brimming with talent.
Joao Felix, Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Jota, Bernardo Silva – this side surely have the potential to rack up some goals over the next few weeks. And despite a couple of defeats in recent friendlies, Portugal breezed through qualifying with 10 wins from 10 games – keeping clean sheets in nine of those matches, too.
Ronaldo contributed to the Euros qualifying process with 10 goals – and by most accounts, without making it all about himself. Which let’s face it, hasn’t always been the case with the Al Nassr star.
Portugal are clear favourites to see off the Czechs then. Even with captain Tomas Soucek and forward Patrik Schick capable of delivering for the Czechs, Martinez’s side should have too much for them. Portugal have won their last four matches with the Czechs, conceding one goal in that run. Back Portugal to win and over 2.5 goals in a double at 27/25.
