Fight Night Live at York Hall preview: Mark Chamberlain, Liam Williams & more

There seems to be a sea change taking place in British boxing.

For years, the sport was carried by a seemingly endless conveyor belt of elite amateurs and Olympians. Just a brief look back at the fighters who have headlined British shows this year shows that that situation is changing and none of the fighters who participated in last weekend’s exciting Magnificent Seven show in Manchester enjoyed long, storied amateur careers.

They all battled against the odds to take their seat at boxing’s top table, selling tickets, taking poorly paid fights against late notice opponents and combining their passion with full time jobs.

It just goes to show that with perseverance and determination, talent will always make itself known.

Chamberlain is tall, wiry and tough

It is good to see fighters rewarded for travelling the tough path from the small halls to the arenas and this weekend, another batch of Queensberry’s brightest hopes get the chance to push their names forward and into title consideration. Mark Chamberlain isn’t far away from making that step into major title contention. The unbeaten lightweight is one of the hardest punching fighters in Britain. Nine of his 13 victories have come inside the distance. Chamberlain is tall, wiry and seems to hurt people with every shot he throws.

Ramlovs took highly ranked Archie Sharp the distance a few years ago but has yet to record a victory outside of his native Latvia. He has scored eight knockouts himself but has been fighting at a lower level than Chamberlain. He is usually a tough, determined operator and he will need every bit of that resilience this weekend.

Ramlovs looks unlikely to fold quickly but Chamberlain should continue his unbeaten run and may be able to notch up another stoppage as the fight reaches the midway point. Chamberlain’s most dangerous enemy this weekend is complacency.

Williams isn’t the type to drag things out

Liam ‘The Machine’ Williams should be finalising preparations for a highly anticipated middleweight fight with Hamzah Sheeraz. Instead, Sheeraz’s withdrawal with a perforated ear drum means that the former British champion and world title challenger keeps busy against Romanian, Florin Cardos.

Williams hasn’t boxed since last November so will be delighted to get some practice in under live fire but should be able to end the fight when he chooses. Cardos is a tall southpaw who should present an inviting target for Williams’ left hook and right hand. Williams isn’t usually the type to drag things out any longer than he has to but it wouldn’t be a surprise if he decided to get a few rounds under his belt and head into the delayed fight with Sheeraz with as little ring rust as possible.

Henry Turner has really hit his stride over the past twelve months, stopping his last three opponents. ‘The Showman’ may not have graduated though the Team GB setup but he was an outstanding amateur and a seven-time national champion and has found his feet as a professional.

Turner vs Allington – fight of the night?

Last time out, the unbeaten super lightweight forced the respected Tom Farrell to retire after six rounds and this weekend he fights Billy Allington. Now, Allington’s name may not set off many fireworks outside of those involved in the boxing business but this is a good step up for Turner.

Allington is a former English champion and he forced hot prospect, Dalton Smith, to go the full twelve round distance in a British title attempt in April. He will travel to London with hopes – maybe even expectations – of troubling Turner. Turner has the ability to win and his confidence should have gone to another level after his victory over Farrell, he should continue his progression but this could well be the fight of the night.

The bill also sees the return of exciting middleweight prospect, Ben Fail. The Londoner has heavy hands and has stopped three of his four opponents so far. Welterweight Khalid Ali also returns to action. Ali is unbeaten in six fights and will be looking for a step up in opposition in 2024.
