Frank Warren exclusive on this weekend’s Magnificent Seven event

The Magnificent Seven ride into town again on Saturday night as Queensberry bring the latest edition of their popular multi-title format shows to Birmingham’s Resorts World Arena.

After battling to an exciting draw in March, unbeaten British middleweight champion, Nathan Heaney, and Brad Pauls will collide in a rematch but they are supported by a busy undercard packed full of exciting prospects and 32Red decided to get the lowdown on who to look out for from Hall of Fame promoter, Frank Warren. “It’s a shame about Liam Davies”

IBO super bantamweight champion, Liam Davies, was due to headline the card against his British rival, Shabaz Masoud, but was forced out after contracting an illness which prevented him from training.

It may sound strange to start a story about a packed fight card by talking about a boxer who isn’t fighting but Davies has been so impressive over the past couple of years that it only feels right to get an update on his progress.

“We want to get that fight [with Masoud] back on. It’s a shame because Liam’s had a lot of momentum and he’s really established himself on the world stage but he obviously couldn’t fight after his illness and he’ll fight again in the autumn,” Davies’ promoter, Warren, told 32Red.

The beneficiary of Davies’ misfortune was Zach Parker, 24-1 (17 KOs). With a slot opening up on the busy show, Parker got the call and has been given a perfect showcase. The unbeaten Derby man will fight Jack Arnfield, 26-3 (6 KOs), in Birmingham.

The unbeaten super middleweight outpointed former WBA world champion, Tyrone Zeuge, in March but put in a far from convincing display and was dropped for the first time in his career. Parker knows that he needs to remind people exactly what he is capable of when he fights Arnfield on Saturday and although Warren still has high hopes for Parker, he too wants to see something from the 30-year-old.

“He has to sparkle this weekend”

“He has to turn it on. He’s got to,” Warren said. “We got right behind Zach and he put some great performances in in the ring. Then, he had to come off the loss to John Ryder where he had the hand injury but, since then, he’s just not sparkled. He has to sparkle this weekend.”

A little further down the card, the explosive and aggressive Liverpudlian, Andrew Cain, 11-1 (10 KOs), gets the chance to announce himself as a serious threat at title level when he takes on British and Commonwealth bantamweight champion, Ashley Lane, 18-10-2 (3 KOs).

Cain made his name at super bantamweight but badly injured his hand during a thrilling, close defeat to Ionut Baluta last March. He used the thirteen months he was forced to spend out of the ring working on his game and when he returned to the ring in April at 118lbs, the 27-year-old looked back to his ferocious best when stopping the solid Darwing Martinez in four rounds.

Lane’s upset victory over Chris Bourke to win the titles in March was one of boxing’s feel good stories of the year. Lane has had an up and down career and after upsetting Bourke, he spoke about having been homeless at one point in his life and talked about hoping to inspire youngsters who find themselves in similarly difficult circumstances.

“Cain looks a real handful”

Cain isn’t the type to get caught up in sentimentality and knows that beating Lane would be a launchpad to bigger and better things.

“He looks a real handful doesn’t he?” Warren said of Cain. “In his last performance, he had a bit of ring rust to get out of his system but once he got into his groove he really showed what he’s all about. This is a good fight for him against a guy who’s coming in with a fairytale story when you look at it. This could be Cain’s moment. He can really show what he’s all about.”

Cain fights out of the same Everton Red Triangle stable as WBA featherweight champion, Nick Ball, and operates in the same no-nonsense fashion. Warren is a fan of the way the pair go about their business.

“It’s a relentless style and they have a real will to win,” he said. “They’re exciting too. They’re really good fighters to watch. Bantamweight suits him down to the ground.”

Chantelle Cameron, 18-1 (8 KOs), will make her first appearance under the Queensberry banner on the show. The former undisputed super lightweight champion has had a successful career but secured her position as one of the top female boxers in the world by beating the great Kate Taylor in 2023.

She lost her belts to the great Irish fighter in a rematch six months later but is desperate to reclaim her standing. Cameron fights France’s highly ranked Elhem Mekhaled, 17-2 (3 KOs), and, if she is successful, will then target a high profile name.

“It has to be a big name after this for Chantelle,” Warren said. “We have to go for a real big fight. This isn’t an easy job, by the way. I’ve looked at the girl and she’s not a knockover. She’s well ranked too. We want a big domestic dust up for Chantelle next.”
