With 128 players vying for a spot in the main event through ‘best of 9’ matches, the journey is anticipated to be no less exciting than the main event itself and there are some interesting matches to look forward to.
The high-stakes tournament continues with the main event held from 29 Jan – 4 Feb 2024 at the resplendent Tempodrom in Berlin, Germany. Cue the action and some things to look out for this week in Sheffield.
There is no fear of another no-show from Ronnie O’Sullivan this week following his last-minute withdrawal from the Scottish Open last week as his first-round qualifier has been held over to the main event on 29th January where he faces Belgian Julie Leclerq.
Also held over are Judd Trump, Ali Carter, recent shoot-out 147 star Shaun Murphy and the Shoot out winner, our very own Mark Allen. They are joined by Luca Brecel, Neil Robertson and Mark Selby in an attempt to get the crowd in early on the opening days in Berlin.
So, to this week; we still have some big names on show.
Latest German Masters Qualifying betting
The revelation of the season Zhang Anda should have a relatively easy task on his hands in Mostafa Dorgham, which will see him in the final of another ranking tournament and in turn boost his world rankings further in what is a landmark season for him.
Going south in the rankings with what can only be described as ‘abject form’ is Stephen Maguide, although arguably he has been presented with an opportunity to get back to winning ways in facing female player Rebecca Kenna. She has yet to defeat a male counterpart in her professional career, but often takes a frame, so keep that in mind for correct frame score betting.
David Gilbert will be looking to bounce back after leading Kyren Wilson in the Scottish Open 3-0 only to crumble and lose 3-4 departing the competition – he plays Dean Young in R1 Qualifying.
A name that many might not have heard of is Rory Thor from Malaysia – currently ranked 111 in the world, he plays Ben Mertens. In Edinburgh last week he defeated both Ashley Carty [76] and Daniel Wells [87] but despite taking only 1 frame from defending Scottish Open champion and #1 seed Gary Wilson, it should be noted that Wilson was on a maximum break twice, giving Thor no chance in two of the 4 frames he lost.
Ryan Day faces the 17-year-old youngster everyone is talking about in Stan Moody, who enjoyed shoot-out success two weeks ago and looks to be gaining a lot of favour in the way he plays and likes to entertain the crowd. Keep an eye out for this match, it could be very entertaining.
Finally, one of the veterans of snooker and regular Eurosport commentator Dominic Dale plays Liu Hongyu. Dale last week defeated Jimmy White in a clash for the ages in Scotland and has been showing a bit of resurgence in form this season.
So for now, enjoy the final qualifying tournament of the year, have a great Christmas break and new year, and the previews will return for the Masters at Alexandra Palace in 2024, from the 7th of January!
