Henry Turner exclusive: every single fight I’m improving

Henry Turner exclusive: every single fight I’m improving

Henry Turner has slowly but surely crept his way up the British super lightweight rankings, adding power to his poise and building a fairly impressive CV.

‘The Showman’ boxes big punching Colombian, Maykol Mendoza, on TNT Sports on Saturday night and although he is looking forward to once again displaying his talents, the slick 23-year-old insists that he is still some way from being the final product. “I improve massively every time”

Henry Turner

“Definitely not. I think even in my next fight you’ll see an even better version of me,” Turner, 12-0 (4 KO’s), told 32Red. “I improve massively every time. Every single fight I’m taking little bits from it, going back to the gym and working on them. I don’t think you’ll see the peak Henry Turner until I hit my peak in age either. I’ve got my skill pretty much there but power wise, I think I’m improving every single time. My brain is getting more and more used to working around a professional ring and I get more knowledgeable every time.

“I don’t think I’m near the finished article just yet but I’m getting closer and closer.”

Britain’s 140lb division is packed with talent. Former undisputed world champion, Josh Taylor, and Jack Catterall will finally settle their grudge when they rematch in Leeds next month and although Dalton Smith and Adam Azim have yet to step foot in the ring, they have been embroiled in a high profile, long running rivalry.

Smith currently holds the British title but after impressively knocking out Jose Zepeda last month, he looks like moving up to world level. Turner sees the British title as the ideal next step in his development and has worked his way up the rankings by beating Tom Farrell and Billy Allington. If Smith does give up the title, Turner wants to be in position to fight for the belt.

“I think when he gets a shot at the European title – which he should get soon – I think he’ll move on and he’s also obviously got a WBC silver title now which its pretty much a mandatory shot for the WBC title so he’s way past British level now. There’s probably no need for him to hold on to that title for much longer,” Turner said.

“I’ve got some great fights in my future”

Henry Turner

“I wanted domestic opponents and the step ups because I want to box for the British title so boxing those kids was pushing me towards that. I wanted that this time too but Bradley Townsend pulling out quite late made it hard to get another domestic opponent. We chose this Colombian who was the best we could get last minute. I’m looking forward to it and – after this fight – it hopefully won’t be long before I get my shot at the British title.”

If and when the British title does become available, Turner will find himself battling for one of the most revered prizes in the sport with a long list of hungry boxers. Fighters like Townsend, Commonwealth champion, Jack Rafferty, and Luke McCormack will all have designs on the Lonsdale belt and whoever emerges from that group will have proved themselves more than ready to follow the likes of Smith and Azim into international class. The stylish Turner is looking forward to proving himself the best of the bunch.

“The domestic scene in Britain at 140lbs – in my opinion anyway – is probably one of the strongest in terms of talent,” he said. “You’ve got all those names and great fighters and we’re obviously all going to have to fight each other one day so there will be some great fights.

“We’re a bit like the dark horses but we’re all coming through. I’ve got some great fights in my future. I just have to keep ticking those boxes and working my way to the top.”
