How to master… a proper fry-up
When it comes to hangover cures, there’s nothing like a proper fry-up. But, mastering the classic breakfast dish is harder than it looks. Get your timings wrong and you could end up with anything but a crispy brekkie. Choose the wrong ingredients and your meal could quickly go down the pan. So, if you want to rustle up a truly egg-cellent fry-up, follow our tasty, step-by-step guide.
What you’ll need:
- English pork sausages
- Free-range eggs
- Back bacon from your local butcher
- Black pudding
- A handful of mushrooms
- 1 tomato
- A cup of Heinz baked beans (or home-made if you’re feeling adventurous)
- A couple slices of bread
- Ketchup or Brown sauce
Start with the sausage
Britain’s favourite processed meat may have got a knocking in the press for being carcinogenic, but no fry-up would be complete without a good sausage. Prick the meat with a fork and then stick it in the pan with a hefty glug of oil*. Fry those babies until they’re brown for a real banger!
*pop them in the oven if you’re the health-conscious type.
Grill the bacon and tomatoes
Next, you’ll want to focus on the bacon and tomatoes. Slice the veg lengthways, sprinkle with a pinch of salt, then leave to grill for about 12 minutes alongside the bacon. We say opt for back bacon instead of the streaky kind, for a fry-up that makes you squeal with delight.
Sizzle some mushrooms
While the other ingredients are cooking, remove the stalks from the mushrooms and then sauté until brown. Or if you’re a really fungi, cook the mushrooms in the same pan as the sausage to taste tons of extra flavour.
Whack on the black pudding
It may be an acquired taste, but don’t skip on the black pudding. Cut a few big slices and then fry them up with your sausage and mushrooms. We say 4-5 minutes is just long enough before your black pudding really brings home the bacon.
Leave the eggs until last
When it comes to the eggs, just cook them how you like them best – whether that’s fried, poached or scrambled. Pop a few slices of a bread in the toaster and we egg-spect they’ll be ready by the time the eggs are done.
Serve it up
Lastly, pop all your ingredients on one plate, squeeze some ketchup or brown sauce on the side, then tuck in to your absolutely scrummy fry-up.
