When you have two cards of the same value, you can “Split” them into two separate hands, effectively giving yourself two chances to win in one hand.
Some blackjack variants allow you to Surrender half your bet – useful if you don’t have much confidence in your hand winning.
And, again on certain blackjack variants, if the dealer’s visible card is an Ace, you can opt to take insurance. In essence, this means you’re betting on the dealer completing his Blackjack.
