Jack Catterall – Fights to Watch
Jack Catterall has mastered the art of patience over the past couple of years.
The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has placed the biggest obstacle yet on Catterall’s path to a world title but ‘El Gato’ is safely installed as the mandatory contender for the WBO Junior Welterweight title and when life does get back to some kind of normality – and it will – he is assured a shot at the winner of the upcoming fight between unified WBC and WBO champion Jose Carlos Ramirez and Viktor Postol.
Catterall has chosen three fights he thinks you should watch whilst the sporting world stands still. His list includes fights which matter to him, ones which influenced him and those that he just enjoys watching.
Pernell Whitaker v Jose Luis Ramirez 2
WBC Lightweight title, March 1988
With me being a southpaw, I think this is an absolute masterclass. Pernell got badly robbed in the first fight they had. He won that clearly but they gave Ramirez a split decision. It’s easily one of the worst decisions ever. In the second fight, Pernell made no mistake. Some of the defensive skills Pernell shows are just unbelievable. It’s just brilliant to watch.
Mike Tyson v Trevor Berbick
WBC Heavyweight title, November 1986
Mike Tyson is my favourite fighter. I love the way he went about his business. No nonsense and all out aggression. I even wear the same black shorts as Mike did. What a way to become the youngest ever heavyweight champion in history, he absolutely demolished Trevor Berbick. It’s only short but its spectacular.

What a show these two put on for our entertainment. Both of these two put on exciting fights right through their careers but when they finally met it was a thrilling war. The fight swings backwards and forwards and has one of the best rounds ever. I’m not gonna tell you which one. You’ll have to watch it. The craziest thing about this fight? They did it twice more.
