Jamie Spencer: 7f on decent ground in a strongly-run race is what he wants
Quargent
I haven’t sat on her at home but hopefully she is as good as her pedigree – she is a War Front out of a well-related and smart mare – and her $585,000 price tag suggests. Apparently, she goes nicely. I won on a similar type for Jeremy first time out at Doncaster last month, another two-year-old filly in Quivery, but Aidan’s Sizzling has experience and could take a fair bit of beating.
Island Vision
She didn’t do a great deal in three starts in Meydan earlier in the year, although she didn’t run badly on one occasion, and probably needed it when racing too freely here last time on her first start since February. She is 3lb lower here and is weighted to go close if returning to her autumn form, which included a Listed race third on the Rowley course.
Buckstay
He may not have got the run of the race in the Wokingham last time but it was still disappointing that he only beat one home. Peter has put blinkers on him for the first time here and hopefully that will galvanise him. If it does, he is weighted to go well – he is 2lb lower than when not beaten far at Ascot two starts ago – and hopefully he can run a better race than he did when ninth in this race last year. 7f on decent ground in a strongly-run race is what he wants.
Mr Lupton
A mark of 112 tells you what a classy sprinter he is, and he put up some handicap performance when winning at Newmarket off a mark of 107 in May. But this just happens to be one of the hottest July Cups in recent times and if he finishes in the first six he will have done remarkably well. I fancy the 3yos in the race, and I think the front-running track style should make it closer between Caravaggio and Harry’s Angel. I don’t think the older sprinters are as good.
Batts Rock
This is another of my mounts wearing first-time headgear, in his case cheekpieces. He hasn’t really gone on from an excellent reappearance second at Ascot, but the handicapper has eased him 1lb and Michael’s horses continue in great form. I think the step back down to 1m4f could suit him, too.
