Jamie Spencer: He loves it here and I’d be pretty sweet on his chances

He ran a couple of good races for me earlier in the season and has continued to acquit himself with credit, and he wasn’t beaten far in the Lennox Stakes last time. And he loves it here, as the course is set up perfectly for him. He was third to Nemoralia in this race last season and that was the latest in a series of excellent runs here, which have also seen him pick up two good handicaps over course and distance. This is clearly a very competitive renewal but Tuesday’s rain would have been fine for him, and I’d be pretty sweet on his chances at a price.

I think it is fair to say that he was one of the biggest eye-catchers at the Goodwood meeting. He was beaten the best part of 7 lengths by Tuesday’s disappointment Dee Ex Be in a 7f maiden there but that doesn’t tell you half the story as he was continually denied a run up the rail for the last two furlongs and only really got into his stride late on, finishing powerfully to finish third. Clearly, there are other promising once-raced horses in here, as well as expensive newcomers, but if he can build on that Goodwood run – and the form looks okay, for all the winner blew out here on Tuesday, with a couple of winners coming out of the race already – then I would hope he can be on the premises.

This horse really impressed me in wins at Salisbury and Newbury, so I was a little disappointed by his third at Chelmsford last time and he is 1lb higher here. To be fair, he didn’t get the run of the race that day, and I think he is better than he showed there. Hopefully the ground will continue to dry out for him, and I expect him to go well, for all this is a competitive handicap.
