Good Way Off
She was tried over further in her two starts in France last year but appeared to appreciate the step down to this trip on her first start for Luca at Bath last month. Of course, that win in a maiden is some way detached from what is needed for her to even be competitive in this much higher grade, but she is obviously open to a lot of improvement and the stable know what they are doing when they pitch lowly-rated horses into these races, as we have seen with God Given this season. I think that filly was rated even lower than Good Way Off’s mark of 83 when winning a Listed race on the July course earlier in the season. And if the search for valuable black type doesn’t pay off here, then nothing has been lost; this does look a big ask for her, though, I admit that.
Pleasant Surprise
This is a filly I have always had a lot of time for and she is progressing nicely. She was on the wrong side of the track when second on the July course last month and then she was just picked up late in a 1m4f Listed race at Saint-Cloud last time. It was a typical French race there, as they went no pace and I was left in front on the bridle a furlong out when the leader stopped, and she idled. So, she hasn’t had the best of luck of late. But, for all she needs to improve to win this, I do think there is plenty more to come from her and I can definitely see her progressing into a Group filly. She has been on the go since April, though, so hopefully this isn’t one race too far. She has a big chance, if it isn’t.
Jallota
He wasn’t at his best on soft ground at Chantilly last time but he was a bit unlucky at York the time before and would have chances on that form. He also finished a good third to Aclaim over 7f here last autumn. At 6yo, he obviously lacks the scope of some of the improvers and 3yos like Beat The Bank, who looks the horse to beat in here after his Goodwood win, but he has each-way prospects if running up to his best, though this does look a decent Group 2. Ideally, we could have probably done without the recent rain for him, though he has form with cut.
Recollect
Coat Of Arms is obviously the form horse in here and could take a fair bit of beating but there are some promising horses against him – not least Court Of Justice, who I rode when he was second on his debut at Ascot – and plenty of newcomers from big stables. I ride Recollect, who is an Invincible Spirit colt from a good family and a half-brother to a smart juvenile filly in Remember among others. I have ridden him at home and he is a nice, big colt, but probably more one for the future.
Fire Tree
He hasn’t run up to his best on his last two starts and he hasn’t even been dropped 1lb by the handicapper. But, on the plus side, his defeat of Brilliant Vanguard at Ascot in July has worked out well – the runner-up has won his last three – and he looks fairly treated on that victory and the 1m1f trip isn’t an issue for him. The recent rain will hopefully be okay, too.
