Jamie Spencer: I think he will be pretty competitive here if I get a good early pitch
Quivery
She cost a lot earlier this year but it is beginning to look money well spent after two wins. I have been lucky enough to be on her both times and she followed up her Doncaster defeat of a well-fancied Godolphin newcomer on her debut with a Newmarket novice win under a 7lb penalty last time. The Newmarket form is probably not working out that well but that doesn’t particularly bother me, as she is a class filly who I would like to think will continue to progress as she is faced with sterner challenges. That is certainly what she is confronted with here, though, and this will tell us a lot more about her. The drying ground is a big plus to her.
Ultimate Avenue
He has been pulled out a couple of times recently because the ground has gone against him, so hopefully the rain stays away and he can take his chance on a decent surface. If he does, then I would like to think he will go close, even though the handicapper put him up 3lb for his third over 6f at Newmarket. I was quite taken with him there and he was probably a little unfortunate not to win, all things considered, as he travelled really well throughout the race and I had to switch him to get a clear run late on, and he was only beaten a head and ½ length in third. The form looks very strong too, as the fourth, fifth and sixth have all won since. That was over 6f but the step up to 7f won’t be any issue at all – you only have to look at his earlier runs over this trip to see that – and I think he will be pretty competitive here if I can get a good early pitch from stall five.
Prince Maurice
I don’t know anything about him as such, but he looks a speedily-bred American colt and we know that Jeremy can have them ready first time out. So there are reasons to be hopeful, though some of the raced horses in here have shown a bit.
Second Step
This is arguably his easiest task of the season, for all that he carries a 3lb penalty for his Goodwood win and meets a higher-rated horse in Across The Stars. But whereas that horse has questions to answer now in that he has been gelded and is tried in a first-time hood, my horse looks very solid and bumped into a very smart and progressive horse in Poet’s Word at Goodwood last time. Hopefully, they all have me to beat.
Abiento
We just got touched off in the soft in a three-runner race at Yarmouth last time, when he was tried in a first-time hood. He has form on a better surface and, off the same mark and with the headgear off, hopefully he can be competitive.
Abel Tasman
He hasn’t really gone on from his debut effort, after which he was gelded, and he only beat one home at Lingfield last time. But hopefully the step up in trip, and on his handicap debut off a mark of just 64, can see him step forward.
