Jamie Spencer: I thought he was going to win for most of the race
Court Of Justice
His sire Dabirsim is having a good time with his first crop, with the likes of Albany winner Different League, so hopefully this one is useful. The stable’s 2yos tend to need the experience first time up, and that has been the case so far again this season, but he cost a fair bit at the Breeze-Ups earlier in the season and 7f looks a good starting point for him on pedigree. I rode him at home when he first came in, but I haven’t sat on him since June.
Soliloquy
She is a well-related Dubawi filly who shaped well against experienced rivals at Newmarket on her debut. That form is just about the best on offer here as it stands, but obviously she is meeting similar unexposed youngsters and some newcomers from top yards.
Birchwood
I thought the step to a mile would suit him last time after being tried over 6f and so it proved as he ran a blinder to finish third at Goodwood. In fact, for most of the race I thought he was going to win so well was he travelling but he just emptied out a bit close home. The handicapper has raised him 3lb for that run, but he is still fairly treated on his best form and perhaps the drop to 7f in a strongly-run race here will suit him equally well, if not better. If the ground turns soft that won’t concern him, as we saw at Goodwood and at Chester last season.
Dubara
I know the filly well and she came good when stepped back to this trip at Goodwood last time. She has gone up 5lb, which is enough, and soft ground would be an unknown – and a worry – for her, but she is from a good family and hopefully there is more to come.
First Nation
He seemed to handle plenty of cut okay at Goodwood last time. The handicapper has left him on the same mark after that defeat though, which is a bit disappointing, but he has some strong handicap form this season and hopefully he can be competitive once again. It’s just a matter of whether one or two of the progressive types in here have more up their sleeves from their marks, and unfortunately that may be the case.
Dream Warrior
I don’t know much about him yet but Charlie’s 2yos tend to know their job first time up and this Dubawi colt certainly looks the part on paper, being out of David’s [Simcock] Beverley D winner I’m A Dreamer. Those with form don’t look anything special so far, so this could rest between the newcomers.
Jordan Sport
I rode him when he won decisively in the soft at Newmarket last time and hopefully a 7lb rise won’t stop him from being competitive once again, even if the form of that victory in a five-runner race hasn’t worked out that well. He had earlier run well over course and distance and the ground won’t be an issue, though this is clearly a deeper race than last time.
Mont Kiara
He bounced back to form after a series of indifferent runs at Newmarket last time. He has gone up 5lb for it but he stills looks fairly treated off 85 – he started the season on 91 – and he has form on good to soft, though nothing more extreme. His best efforts have come over 6f but he does have form over this minimum trip.
