Fajjaj

We had a nice debutant 2yo winner at Haydock on Thursday and hopefully Fajjaj can go well on his first day at school. As everyone knows, though, we like our juveniles to enjoy their first starts, and the ground could ride testing here, but he is a Dawn Approach half-brother to a 7f winner, is from a good family, and goes nicely at home.

Lubinka

I didn’t ride her on her debut but she appears to have shaped really nicely at Doncaster against fillies who had experience. Hopefully she will have learned from that run and she can go well here.

He looks to have rather lost his way on his last two starts, so he has been gelded. Hopefully, that will allow him to recapture his excellent early-season form when he was only beaten around 4 lengths in the 2,000 Guineas. On that form he is nicely weighted off 106, though if it turned testing that would be an unknown for him.

Killay

She has been a model of consistency at Salisbury on her first three runs, and she got off the mark over 7f there last time.  She steps up to a mile for the first time here, but has proven form on soft and hopefully an opening mark of 84 isn’t too harsh for her.

Anythingtoday

Gelding seems to have been the making of him, as he has gone up 17lb in the weights since after a string of excellent runs, including a couple of wins for me.  That obviously makes life hard for him but he clearly comes here in top form, has winning form in the soft and his pedigree gives you hope that this extra 2f will suit.

Aegean Legend

He seemed to handle the conditions well enough when third over 5f in the soft on his debut in July, which probably wasn’t a surprise given he is by Mayson. The extra 2f should be okay on his breeding but he does face some very well-bred newcomers here.

5.05pm Ascot

Aventinus

He has run two good races since winning at Goodwood in June,  finishing second last time out at Chelmsford. He went up another 1lb for that run, which was a bit harsh considering he was beaten 3 ½ lengths, but hopefully there is a bit more improvement to come and he does have some fair form in soft ground.

5.40pm Ascot

Afandem

I thought that he would run better than he did at York last time, when he finished last. He has at least been dropped another 4lb for that modest run though, and if he ever comes back to form then he will go very close to winning off this mark. But he clearly needs to show a lot more than of late, though he handles soft ground really well. Perhaps that will spark him back into life.
