Saturday 5th August

2.05pm Newmarket

Apphia

Even though she wasn’t at all disgraced, I was slightly disappointed with her fourth over course and distance last time. Perhaps she wasn’t ideally suited by the soft ground that day. But it clearly wasn’t a bad effort whatsoever, and she had earlier run a blinder when fourth in the Ribblesdale on fast ground. I hope the going on Saturday will be somewhere in between – it is looking like good ground here at the moment – and that will suit her. Clearly, this race has attracted a massive field, but she has the scope to progress and has definite place claims, and perhaps a winning one. She’s a filly we love.

2.40pm Newmarket

First Drive

She disappointed at Kempton after a very promising debut at Yarmouth, but she bounced back to win nicely at Nottingham last time. A mark of 76 looks okay on the evidence of two of her three starts. and I would love to win a race for the Queen, so you can be sure I will be trying my hardest!

4.25pm Newmarket

Normandy Barriere

He clearly didn’t run up to best in Ireland last time, though it looks like he didn’t get the run of the race at all,  and he is  much better judged on his earlier Ascot win and a good effort in the Wokingham. The step up to 7f won’t be a problem at all as he has loads of big-field form over that trip and I’d say the drier the better for his chances.

5.00pm Newmarket

Tom’s Rock

He went up 7lb after winning at Lingfield in May and that hasn’t stopped him running three good races in defeat since, most recently at Kempton. Good ground, or a little bit of cut, will be fine for him and it’s just a case of whether the handicapper has him for the moment. I hope not, obviously.

5.30pm Newmarket

Archie

He looks to have struggled this season and it is no surprise to see that he has been dropped 7lb as a result. If he comes back to some of the form that he showed last season – and those efforts included an excellent third off an 8lb higher mark over course and distance – then he is certainly weighted to go well. He clearly needs to show more than of late, though.
