Josephine Gordon: We thought he would be a bit of a machine this year
To Be Wild
He was so impressive when winning for me at Doncaster last season, we thought he would be a bit of a machine this year. So I was gutted when he ran a slightly lacklustre race at Newcastle on his reappearance. It wasn’t an awful effort by any means but we were expecting much better, and maybe it was just a case of him not letting himself down on the surface. Even though this will probably be the softest ground he has encountered, I think he will love it, and I am hoping for a much better show. Of course, he steps up in class here and has an awful lot to find on form with these Group 1 winners, but he will love the trip and ground and we haven’t lost faith in him at all.
Just An Idea
He has run some of his better races on soft ground, which is encouraging – he wasn’t beaten far in the Windsor Castle and finished a good third in a Listed race at Sandown on testing ground – but he clearly has to improve a good deal to get into the reckoning here. He has been running okay in handicaps recently, though, when not beaten far.
Bush House
He did really well at Wolverhampton in the winter, finishing second on his debut and then winning his maiden for me, and he looked to face a stiff task on his handicap debut at Doncaster last time. So we were delighted with his fourth there, where he probably ran above expectations. The ground will be a lot softer here but if he handles it, and I think he might, then he has an each-way chance in an open and competitive race.
