Hopefully, I have picked up a ride on an outsider with a shout here. The handicapper has certainly given him a chance, dropping him 5lb since his last run, and he would look a very well-weighted horse if coming back to his 2016 best. Indeed, he is 4lb lower than when winning a very valuable 1m2f Newbury handicap two years ago. He has also been gelded since his last run, his first for Ian Williams, and the stable remain in fair nick. The horse hasn’t shown any solid form for a while, I know that, and he would maybe prefer more ease in the ground.

I haven’t ridden him for a couple of years, but he has certainly developed into a very speedy and classy sprinter in the interim. I don’t know how straight he is for his comeback but he has place claims on his winning form at Chester and Beverley last season, and the drying ground is in his favour. This does look a very competitive Palace House though, even if it lacks that stand-out sprinter. I can see Encore D’Or running a decent race, too.

I haven’t got a ride in the 2,000 Guineas and it looks a tricky race to call this year. But I think I would probably like to ride Gustav Klimt if I had the chance. We didn’t see him after his tremendous effort to overcome trouble in running on the July course last season and I liked what I saw when he quickened up on bad ground to win at Leopardstown on his return. This better surface will suit and I would say he is the right favourite.
