Luke Morris: I think a mark of 98 still gives him some room for manoeuvre
Berkshire
He is probably not the horse he was and wouldn’t want the ground too quick, but he ran a solid race on his return when fourth off a mark of 105 at Chester. He has something to find with the likes of Spark Plug, Tullius and last year’s winner Mount Logan, but he is tactically versatile – and this could be a tactical race – and he has an outside chance if coming forward from Chester.
Volatile
He was undoubtedly disappointing at Newcastle last time but perhaps helping to force the pace over a stiff 1m didn’t suit there, and the return to 7f should see him in a better light. He had earlier finished an excellent third at Lingfield, and the fourth Grey Britain, won at Newmarket on Saturday. He could be vulnerable to some improvers in here but he is lightly-raced himself and I think a mark of 98 still gives him some room for manoeuvre.
Manjaam
He is a solid handicapper and I’d like to think he comes here with a big chance. He got a little bit tired when we were just touched off on his return at Lingfield on his reappearance, he loves fast ground and I think the step up to 1m6f will suit him. He has a lot going for him in what is, admittedly, a competitive handicap.
Light From Mars
He is getting on a bit now as a 12yo and ran a bit below-par for me at Kempton last time but he had earlier only just got touched off over 7f there and, rated 67, he is eligible for this 0-65 handicap. The cheekpieces that he has worn for his three most recent wins are back on, so you can’t rule him out.
Crafty Madam
I rode her when she finished second at Doncaster last time. She ran really well there, and they thought enough of the winner to try him in Listed company last weekend. I definitely think she should be in the shake-up here. She is a half-sister to some very good horses, notably Profitable, and she has plenty of potential herself.
Bostonian
I rode him a couple of times earlier in the season, and he wasn’t beaten far at Kempton in April, and he is now back with the same trainer after one disappointing start over 2m for Jo Hughes. He is probably weighted to run a decent race and he has each-way claims back in trip.
Charlie Rascal
He didn’t run that well when we last saw him but he has been gelded since and he isn’t badly treated on his best maiden form over 7f last season. This is a big step up in trip for him, though, and that is a big question mark.
Penny Red
The ratings tells you anything can win this – and I mean any of the nine – and my filly has shaped well on all three of her starts, so hopefully she can get a valuable win next to her name.
