Luke Morris: Marsha is best placed to take advantage if the big two disappoint

I won on him a couple of times last year and, although he only beat two home in the 1m4f handicap at the Shergar Cup last time, he didn’t run too badly. That was his first start since being gelded and Ed also tries him in a first-time visor here, so there are reasons to be hopeful. And he has come down 5lb in the weights for his recent, below-par runs. He needs to show more to be competitive here, but he is back on a fair mark if he does.
St Michel
There doesn’t look to be any stand-out performer in here, and I have chances. He was third in the Doncaster Cup last season and he ran a good race for me when second at Chelmsford in May before going over to Belmont for a valuable 2m race in June. He picked up a lot of money for finishing runner-up there, just losing out by a neck, and Sir Mark has freshened him up since and he comes here in good form. He has each-way claims in an open race.
Marsha
She looked set for an excellent season after defying a 7lb penalty to win the Palace House in May, so of course it has been disappointing that she hasn’t been able to get her head in front since. But she certainly hasn’t run badly since – though I did expect her to win in Ireland – and it is unfortunate that she has come up against two outstanding sprinters in Lady Aurelia at Ascot and Battaash at Goodwood. Being realistic, those two horses have to run below form to give the others a chance. But, if they do, then I would like to think Marsha is best placed to take advantage. She is a course-and-distance winner, and a high-class sprinter in her own right. Of the two favourites, I would probably just favour Lady Aurelia.
Newborough
I don’t know much about him but he is by Farhh, responsible for Tuesday’s Acomb winner, and is a well-related colt who cost £170,000 as a yearling, so he presumably looks the part. This race normally takes a fair bit of winning, though.
