Merseyside derby preview: Can Toffees turn over the Reds at Goodison?

Merseyside derby preview: Can Toffees turn over the Reds at Goodison?

With Everton relocating to a new stadium next season, the final Merseyside derby to be played at Goodison Park takes place on Wednesday.

It’s an encounter that should have been played back in December. On that occasion, dangerous winds caused by Storm Darragh meant the game couldn’t go ahead as scheduled. But have Liverpool had the wind taken out of their sails for this encounter? Arne Slot’s side suffered unexpected defeat in the FA Cup on Sunday, losing 1-0 to Plymouth at the Home Park stadium.

Can Moyes delight the home crowd?

The Toffees endured an FA Cup defeat of their own at the weekend, losing 2-0 at home to Bournemouth. But the Cherries are having a fine season in the Premier League; Plymouth are currently rock bottom of the Championship.

Liverpool lost against Plymouth basically because they opted to rest players, of course. Against Everton, the visitors will presumably offer a considerably stronger line-up.

Still, it was an unhappy visit to Goodison for Liverpool last season, Jurgen Klopp’s men losing 2-0 to the Toffees, despite the fact Sean Dyche’s side enjoyed just 24% possession of the ball.

Dyche and Klopp have both departed, of course. But David Moyes’ return to his former club has gone pretty well, with the Ev winning their last three league games. Can Moyes delight the home crowd by leaving Slot flummoxed in this midweek meeting?

The hosts stuck four past Leicester in their last league outing. While Liverpool might just prove a little trickier to break down – they’re unbeaten in their last 19 league games – Everton’s attacking players demonstrating that they know where the goal is has to be a bonus.

BTTS No paid off in 6 of the last 7 meetings

Still, despite both sides playing in high scoring games recently – Liverpool beat Tottenham 4-0 in the League Cup last week – it might be worth backing this one for under 2.5 goals at 5/4.

Six of the last seven league games between these sides have seen two or fewer goals scored. Along similar lines, both teams to score No would have paid off in six of the previous seven encounters in the Prem between these sides. BTTS No is a 22/25 shot.

Punters looking for a bigger price – if not necessarily anticipating a more entertaining game – could back the draw at 15/4. Since 2012, in 12 league meetings at Goodison there have been nine draws.

The nil-nil scoreline has come up five times since 2015, too. You can back 0-0 at 13/1 in the correct score market.
