Paddy Brennan: He has pleased us since he has been here

He is one of the horses that Malcolm Denmark kindly sent Fergal in the summer. He ran well below par when we last saw him in April, but that was over 3m and he was a fair 2m hurdler on his day when trained by Tony Martin in Ireland, and one with relatively few miles on the clock. If he comes back to the form of his fourth at Punchestown last Christmas, then he must have chances here, even though he is 7lb higher in the weights now. He doesn’t look especially well-treated on his Irish form but he has pleased us since he has been here and, like I said, he is relatively lightly-raced, too, so he is a lovely horse to get in that respect. He goes very well, I liked him when I sat on him for the first time at home recently, and two miles on this ground look ideal for him. I am hopeful.

I thought he was all set to follow up his win in the race the year before last time out, only for Thomas Campbell to find another gear on the run-in and go on to win convincingly in the end. But it was clearly an excellent effort against a horse some people are talking up as a Stayers’ Hurdle outsider, though a 4lb rise is a bit of a kick in the teeth. But we know he is in form and likes the track and the ground, and hopefully he remains on a competitive mark.
