Paddy Brennan: No-one will be cheering Cue Card on louder than me

Obviously, I was disappointed to hear from Colin [Tizzard] that I had lost the ride on Cue Card – he rang me at 7.06am on the Monday morning after Wetherby – and I took it as a straight red card.

Colin just said: “we are going to find a new jockey” and I appreciated his honesty and directness. Quite clearly, I wasn’t overly-happy at the news, but Colin has over 100 horses, a business to run and decisions to make.

I respected the decision, and moved on. There were certainly no hard feelings, and I was riding for him and Jean [Bishop] within a matter of days.

There will be no-one cheering on Cue Card more than me on Saturday. I have ridden him to five Grade 1 wins, and two victories in this race, and I love the horse to bits.

But I was mightily impressed by Bristol De Mai in the Charlie Hall and I personally think that he could be hard to beat in the heavy ground around here in his current form, though it was too early to make a judgement on how close Cue Card would have gone at Wetherby.
