Premier League Boxing Day preview part 2
Tottenham vs Crystal Palace
After playing their part in one of the games of the season at the weekend as they held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw, Spurs are beginning to realise their potential under Conte.
Palace have had a reasonable campaign so far – including a 3-0 win over Spurs at Selhurst Park. That said, their sole away victory has come against Man City.
Clearly capable on their day, Palace may struggle to get a result in North London this Christmas against a Tottenham side that should be full of confidence. Especially when you consider the grim portent / statistical quirk that Spurs are undefeated in their last 14 league matches played on Boxing Day.
Spurs might struggle to keep Palace from scoring, though – the Eagles have scored in 10 of their last 12 matches. The combined double of Spurs to win and Both Teams To Score is a 13/5 shot.
West Ham vs Southampton
Some of the gloss seems to be coming of West Ham’s campaign. Can David Moyes enjoy some festive cheer against the less than jolly old Saints?
It’s three defeats in four games in all competitions for the Irons but West Ham are unbeaten in their last four home games in the Prem, having beaten Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Hasenhuttl’s Southampton have lost three of their last four away games – not an especially pleasing symmetry for the visitors. This looks a prime opportunity for West Ham to rediscover some of their sparkle; you can back the home win at 22/25.
If you’re after something a little chunkier, West Ham have scored three times against Southampton in each of the last four meetings between these teams at the London stadium, curiously. Backing West Ham to win 3-0 is available at 14/1 – or you can take the less specific approach and back West Ham to score over 2.5 goals at 13/5.
Aston Villa vs Chelsea
Life is sweet for Villa right now; meanwhile, Chelsea’s form means they’re currently out to 12/1 to win the Premier League title this season. Quite a change in price for a previously well-fancied team who, after all, are only six points off Man City’s lead.
Be that as it may, it’s tough to wholeheartedly fancy the West London side at the moment. The Blues have won just one of their last four league games, dropping points to Everton and Wolves in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Villa have lost narrowly against Man City and Liverpool since Steven Gerrard’s arrival. This looks a real chance for Gerrard to tangle with a big six side and come out with more than just a pat on the head. You can back Villa to win at 9/2.
Brighton vs Brentford
Not since early October have Brentford won on the road, though they did at least take all three points in their last game, a few weeks back against Watford. For Brighton’s last win of any description, you have to go back to September.
Nonetheless, the Seagulls may be able to take all three points here. That said, Brighton are odds on for the victory, which is not the most tempting of flutters.
Perhaps it’s better to chance the hosts to win 1-0 at 11/2; that was the score when these sides met back in September. And Graham Potter’s side are not renowned for goals, with a total of three scored in their last six matches…
