Premier League midweek preview: Arsenal vs Liverpool and more

Brighton attempt to arrest their decline against a Tottenham side with an in-form Harry Kane. And Liverpool seek to keep the title race alive with victory over Arsenal.

Brighton vs Tottenham

Not to hit a man when he’s down, but it’s been quite a slump for Graham Potter in recent weeks. Brighton have lost five league games on the bounce, failing to score a goal in four of those outings.

Spurs can fluctuate between highs and lows in alarming style – beating Man City and then losing three days later to Burnley neatly encapsulates that. Still, the North London side are at least regularly finding the net, having scored 19 goals since the start of February.

Antonio Conte’s men also beat Brighton 3-1 in an FA Cup encounter last month. It’s hard not to fancy the visitors to extend the south coast side’s losing run here.

Harry Kane is one goal away from becoming the highest goalscorer in away matches in the history of the Premier League – if he scores here, it will be his 95th goal in 139 games. He’s scored in four of his last five league games too, with six goals in that run.

Kane is 6/4 to score at any time. Spurs are 27/10 to win to nil. If you’re looking for a bigger price, an alternative approach could be to take a chance on Spurs to win 2-0 at 9/1, and 3-0 at 18/1.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

Liverpool have 10 games left to play this season (including a visit to the Etihad) – and if they win them all, they’ll win the Premier League.

Regardless of the Merseyside team’s chances of actually pulling that off, City’s draw to Crystal Palace on Monday night at least suggests we’ve got a title race. So it would be pretty inconsiderate if Arsenal had the temerity to beat Liverpool on Wednesday, right?

But… it’s not crazy, right? The Gunners have won their last five league games, they’ve got the motivation of that Champions League place to fight for, and, er, their record against Liverpool? Well, two out of three ain’t bad.

No, Arsenal haven’t prospered against Liverpool. The sides have met seven times in the last two seasons, with Arsenal failing to win a single encounter. The Gunners haven’t even scored in their last five meetings with Jurgen Klopp’s side. In the last two Premier League clashes, Liverpool have won 3-0 at the Emirates and 4-0 at Anfield.

Even though Arsenal have been on a good run, the victories have come against sides you’d expect Mikel Arteta’s team to beat. Against the best opposition, the North London team tend to come unstuck. It looks good for the visitors, and Liverpool are 9/10 to take all three points.

It might be worth taking a chance on Luis Diaz to score at 47/20 too; the former Porto man got on the scoresheet against Brighton last weekend, and has looked lively since arriving in the January transfer window.

Everton vs Newcastle

Frank Lampard has only overseen one league win since arriving on Merseyside back in February. Since Everton swept Leeds aside 3-0, the Toffees have lost four games on the bounce, failing to score a goal in that time.

Newcastle come into this match off the back of a defeat too. But Chelsea’s hard-fought won over the Magpies was the first time Eddie Howe’s side have been beaten since December; the visitors will be hopeful of a better result at Goodison Park.

Even leaving aside Everton’s dismal recent showings, Newcastle have won their last four league games against this side. Confidence should be high, so taking a chance on Howe’s team seems reasonable, given the hosts current troubles. Newcastle are 21/10 to win.
