Premier League midweek preview: Brighton vs Man City

Are Brighton the side to give Arsenal and Liverpool renewed hope in the title race?

The prospect of the Seagulls catching Pep Guardiola’s side out would provide a thrilling twist in the quest for Premier League glory. But Roberto De Zerbi’s side are struggling with injuries, and have won just one of their last seven league games.

If a home win seems a stretch on Thursday, maybe Brighton can hold City to a draw, though? The hosts were on a 12-match unbeaten run at the Amex, at least until Arsenal turned up earlier this month – and turned the south coast side over 3-0.

If that doesn’t sound auspicious, it starts to look even less promising when you consider Brighton’s record against Pep’s inexorable army. In 13 Premier League games against the Seagulls, City have won 11.

Brighton can take a sliver of comfort from the fact that they did hold City to a draw in this fixture just over a year ago.

City had already wrapped up the Prem at that point however; this time, there’s still plenty of work to be done. It’s difficult to see Guardiola’s side dropping in intensity here.

Backing City at an odds-on price offers little appeal; but with Erling Haaland injured for this game, according to Pep, Phil Foden could offer a decent betting opportunity.

Foden has scored six goals in his last seven appearances against Brighton; he also scored a hat trick in his last Premier League game, when City beat Villa 4-1 at the start of the month.

If Phil can score here, it will be his 50th Premier League goal. You can back Foden to find the onion bag at 11/8.
