Premier League preview: all Sunday’s matches
Newcastle vs Arsenal
Arsenal’s recent form is woefully patchy, and after losing in the Europa League to Villarreal and old boss Unai Emery on Thursday, now the Gunners face a Newcastle side that have looked lively of late.
The Magpies are unbeaten in their last five outings at St James Park. In recent weeks they’ve shown enough fighting spirit to beat a West Ham side in exceptional form, and a last gasp equaliser at Anfield gave Steve Bruce’s side a share of the points against Liverpool last week.
Aubameyang will possibly start for the visitors and has a wonderful record against Newcastle, but the Gabonese striker has only recently returned from injury – and is also on a six-game goalless run. I would be tempted to take a chance on the hosts taking all three points; Newcastle are 27/10 to get the win here.
Manchester United vs Liverpool
It’s the undeniable big match of the weekend, but not to be a party pooper, perhaps it’s worth reining in your expectations for this one. Man United might have ran riot in the second half against Roma on Thursday night; in the Premier League, against the bigger names, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tends to play it safe.
United have been involved in seven matches with a nil-nil scoreline in the Prem this season, including their visit to Anfield back in January, and also against Man City and Chelsea at Old Trafford. It’s not in Solskjaer’s nature to leave himself vulnerable against the more dangerous sides – but of course, it’s possible that Liverpool’s recent difficulties could prompt the Norwegian to let down his guard a little here.
Even discounting Liverpool’s calamitous form in 2021, Klopp has never won at Old Trafford – yet Liverpool have lost only one of their last nine league games against this side.
Even stevens, then? Backing 0-0 here in the correct score market gives you odds of 21/2. If you’re holding out hope for at least some goal action, maybe backing the draw is a better shout at 13/5.
Tottenham vs Sheffield United
Spurs can shake off the disappointment of that League Cup final loss with victory over the already relegated Sheffield United. And Son, last seen getting emotional at Wembley, might cheer up if he can find a goal here; back Spurs to win and the Korean to score in a Wincast for odds of 13/10.
