Premier League preview: all the final day’s action, part 1
Arsenal vs Everton
Whatever happens at the Etihad on the final day of the season, for their part Arsenal just need to win against Everton.
And the Gunners must surely turn over the Toffees. Arteta’s side have dropped points in just two games in 2024, a draw away to City and a loss at home to Villa.
Sean Dyche’s side have finished the season strongly, with five wins in seven games – but each of those victories have come at Goodison Park. When the Merseyside team rocked up at Stamford Bridge last month, they were demolished 6-0 by Chelsea.
Failing total meltdown by the hosts, surely Arsenal will fire a few goals past Dyche’s side here. Arsenal to win and over 3.5 goals in a double is a 19/20 shot.
Or else you could back Leandro Trossard to score at 23/20. The Belgian has four in his last five appearances for the Gunners…
Brentford vs Newcastle
Brentford won away against Bournemouth last Saturday in a victory that could be viewed as a tribute to their manager at a painful time; Thomas Frank’s father had died earlier in the week.
Can the Bees sign off in front of the home fans with another victory, after a tough season when wins have been hard to come by?
Ivan Toney’s return in the second half of the season started well. But the England striker has now gone 11 league games without a goal; can he sign off, perhaps for good, with a goal on Sunday?
If Toney’s not been producing the goods, Alexander Isak has definitely starred for Newcastle; the Swede has failed to find the net in his last two appearances, but looks a good thing to find the net on Sunday, with eight goals in his last nine outings. Back Isak to score.
Brighton vs Man Utd
Brighton have gone unbeaten against Manchester United in their last four meetings in all competitions, winning each of their last three league encounters.
Does that run come crashing to a halt here? Possibly, but it’s not like Man Utd have exactly caught fire in recent weeks; more that the Seagulls are suffering. Roberto De Zerbi watched his side lose against Chelsea in the midweek; that’s a nine-game spell where the south coast side have mustered just a single win.
For their part, United were 3-2 winners in a game that could have gone either way against Newcastle on Wednesday; maybe both sides will enter into this one in a spirit of abandon. Over 4.5 goals is a 9/5 shot.
Burnley vs Nottingham Forest
Burnley are already relegated; Forest live to fight another season in the top flight (unless Luton can overturn a 13 goal deficit in their final game).
There’s nothing on the line here, but maybe the Clarets can at least blow off some steam against a side they have already beaten once this season (in the League Cup).
In fact, Burnley are unbeaten against the Tricky Trees across eight matches. This one might be a little less disciplined than some of those earlier performances, when Sean Dyche was at the helm. Regardless, Burnley to win at 9/5 sounds a decent possibility.
Chelsea vs Bournemouth
On a day of potential goalfests, this one could be a doozy. The Cherries tend to go for it under Iraola, while Chelsea have been goal machines at home in recent months.
At Stamford Bridge, the Blues have scored five against West Ham, six against Everton and four against Man Utd since April. Can Pochettino sign off in style here – and secure a Europa League spot? Over 4.5 goals is an 8/5 shot.
