Premier League preview: Arsenal vs Crystal Palace
After a saggy first half of a season that saw Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal tumbling down the league table, the Gunners would appear to be back on target. The North London side have been victorious in their last three league games and won in the FA Cup against Newcastle at the weekend – even if they needed extra time to get the job done.
Arsenal eventually won 2-0 against the Magpies, and if the performance didn’t exactly proclaim the dog days are completely done with, it would be churlish not to recognise four wins on the bounce.
By contrast, Palace were dumped out of the Cup by Wolves, and have won just one of their last six league outings – the 2-0 victory over Sheffield United a week ago.
Still, Palace did get the better of Arsenal in this fixture in 2019 with a win at the Emirates – and in fact, Hodgson’s side have managed to hold out for a draw in three of the last four meetings between the two sides.
That’s Palace’s longest ever unbeaten streak against the Gunners. They are also currently just a point worse off than Arsenal in the league table.
Even given Arsenal’s mini-revival, it’s tough to see much appeal at odds of 11/20 for a straight home win. Backing Bukayo Saka to score for the home side might be a better option – it would be his third goal in four matches, with the impressive 19-year-old 23/10 to score at any time.
Otherwise, perhaps backing the draw at 16/5 is the way to go. It’s tough to say definitively whether or not Arsenal have put their woes completely behind them, and the fact that Palace have taken at least a point from each of the last four meetings between these sides suggests it might be worth chancing another stalemate here.
