Premier League preview: Aston Villa vs Liverpool
With Liverpool officially out of the title race, Jurgen Klopp’s final days with the Merseyside club aren’t ending in the fashion that Reds fans would have hoped.
Liverpool’s remaining two matches are effectively meaningless, with Klopp’s side having already done enough to take third place in the Prem, but unable to finish any higher.
Still, the departing manager will hope his side can at least finish this campaign with wins in their remaining two games. On Monday, that means overcoming the side that sit just one position below Liverpool in the league table.
Klopp’s side head to Villa Park – and given Aston Villa’s excellence under Unai Emery this season, and the fact that Liverpool have failed to win either of their last two away games, could this be a challenging encounter for the visitors?
Perhaps. But Villa’s season has also lost some momentum in recent games, the side crashing out of the Europa Conference League at the hands of Olympiakos last week.
In fact, Villa are winless in their last four matches in all competitions, having lost away to Brighton a week ago in the Prem.
Villa’s record against Liverpool is disheartening for the hosts too; the Villans have won just one of their last 12 meetings with Liverpool, losing ten of those encounters.
Klopp has missed out on his final chance to add another Premier League title to his haul of trophies. But maybe this match can serve as an opportunity for Liverpool to rage against the dying of that light. Liverpool to win and over 2.5 goals is a 19/20 shot.
