Premier League preview: Aston Villa vs Liverpool
In this fixture last season, Jhon Duran scored two late goals to give Villa a share of the points, after Liverpool had gone 3-1 up early in the second half. Jhon’s gone now – but could a similar blockbuster be in store on Wednesday?
Truth be told, neither side has looked to be in exceptional form in recent outings. Liverpool might not have been at the most convincing as they beat Wolves 2-1 on Sunday. But at least they took all three points.
Villa have only won twice in their last eight
At Villa Park on Saturday, Aston Villa faced an Ipswich side reduced to 10 men in the 40th minute – and still had to settle for a draw, Ollie Watkins’ second half goal made it 1-1 after Liam Delap had given the visitors the lead.
If Villa can’t see off relegation strugglers Ipswich, it’s tempting to ask what chance do they have against the league leaders? In fact, the Villans have only won twice in their last eight league games – those victories coming against Leicester and Everton.
The good news for the hosts is that Liverpool are looking at least somewhat out of sorts themselves. A draw against Everton preceded the slightly iffy win over Wolves – during Sunday’s game at Anfield, Liverpool didn’t even manage a shot in the second half.
Still, the Reds were able to find the net twice in the first half. They’ve also scored two goals in each of their last three away games.
Maintaining that scoring rate on the road could well be enough to see off the Birmingham side. After all, Villa have won just one of their last 14 league encounters with Liverpool.
With Unai Emery’s side not having much joy, goal-wise – they’ve scored twice in their last three league outings – it seems feasible that even if this Liverpool team aren’t quite at their best, they might not have too much difficulty winning this one.
Combine Liverpool to win and Under 3.5 goals in a double at 9/5.
