Premier League preview: Aston Villa vs Newcastle
Aston Villa put in a battling performance against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday night – and it wasn’t enough.
After fighting back to 3-2 on the night, having gone two goals down in the opening 30 minutes, Villa lost 5-4 on aggregate. While the Birmingham side can take solace from their refusal to lie down, in the end it was a tough night for the Villans – and this coming weekend may not offer respite.
Villa have been in impressive form over the last six weeks, but Newcastle have won their last six in all competitions – a run that includes victory over Liverpool in the League Cup final.
On Wednesday night, the Magpies rinsed Crystal Palace 5-0 at St James’ Park. Eddie Howe is still recovering from a bout of pneumonia, but his side are continuing to maintain the manager’s standards in his absence.
Jason Tindall is in charge while Howe recuperates – and Tindall can look to Newcastle’s strong away record as they look to impress at Villa Park on Saturday.
Newcastle have won six of their last eight away games; the exceptions were defeats to Liverpool and Man City. The Magpies have also got the better of Villa in each of the last three meetings between these sides. That run may well continue here; Newcastle are 37/20 to win this one.
