Everton vs Aston Villa
After a decent run from Sean Dyche’s Everton in the first half of December, the Toffees are winless in their last five in all competitions. That includes three straight defeats in the Prem – and now the Merseyside team welcome high-flying Aston Villa.
The Villans are second in the league table at the time of writing, and have a fine recent record at Goodison Park, with wins in each of their last three visits.
Meanwhile, Everton’s problems locating the net have rematerialised. The side have mustered three goals in their last five games in all comps.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s fitness used to be key to Everton’s success. But DCL is currently injury-free, yet has failed to find the net in his last 12 outings.
On current evidence, simply backing Villa for the win at 11/8 seems a decent shout. Otherwise, Ollie Watkins remains the go-to man to score for Villa – and he has a decent record on previous visits to Goodison, converting a penalty in this fixture last season, and also scoring here in the 2020/21 season. Watkins is 33/20 to find the net on Sunday.
Man Utd vs Spurs
Man Utd are not a team to put your trust in at the moment. True, they won against Villa at Old Trafford on Boxing Day when plenty of people expected Erik ten Hag’s men to flounder.
But they were beaten 3-0 at home by Bournemouth prior to that. More generally, United have lost four of their last seven league games; even with Tottenham losing Heung Min Son to the Asian Cup, it’s not hard to imagine Ange Postecoglou eyeing this match wolfishly.
The Aussie’s side are full of confidence, having won five of their last six in all comps. Spurs earned a point at the Etihad with their never say die approach in the 3-3 against Man City in December; a visit to Old Trafford should hold no fears for the north London side.
With Tottenham having scored in each of their last 32 Premier League games, and United not exactly adroit at keeping opponents at bay, perhaps new recruit Timo Werner can shine; another January signing for Tottenham, defender Radu Dragusin, may make an appearance too.
Even if the on-loan Werner can’t quite enjoy a dream debut, there’s every chance Spurs can do a job on United. Tottenham are 41/20 to win.
