Premier League preview: Liverpool vs Burnley

Premier League preview: Liverpool vs Burnley

Liverpool are winless in their last four league games. They haven’t scored in three league matches.

After the goalless draw against Manchester United at the weekend, Jurgen Klopp suggested he was concerned about his side’s ability to finish in the top four. What’s going on?

Whatever it is – significant injuries, the demands of the current calendar, general fatigue – the Merseyside team have dropped points in nine of the 18 league games they’ve played so far this season.

It makes for quite a contrast, compared to last season’s exploits. In the previous campaign, Klopp’s team dropped a grand total of two points across their first 27 league games.

At first glance, maybe it’s a good time for Burnley to be coming to Anfield, then? Well, let’s not go crazy.

Even if Liverpool’s standards have slipped somewhat, they’re still unbeaten at home in the Prem since April 2017 – that’s getting on for four years.

Sean Dyche’s Burnley should hold little fear for the home side, either. The Clarets remain just one place clear of the relegation zone, and have lost three of their last four league games, scoring just a single goal across the entirety of those matches.

In fact, Burnley have scored just nine Premier League goals all season. Nine goals!

Still, with Burnley’s last four matches all featuring 1-0 scorelines, and recent Liverpool games being similarly short on goalmouth action, maybe it’s best not to think too ambitiously here.

A Liverpool win combined with under 2.5 goals might be worth considering – that double offers odds of 11/4. Otherwise, you could chance a 1-0 win to Liverpool at 7/1.
