Premier League preview: Liverpool vs Luton
Jurgen Klopp will be well aware of Luton’s ability to cause problems under the right circumstances. After all, when Liverpool played the Hatters back in November at Kenilworth Road, it ended 1-1.
A result that felt like a shock at the time, since then Luton have produced other unexpected results. Like a 4-0 win over Brighton, and a 4-4 draw away to Newcastle.
On the face of it, Rob Edwards’ men have their work cut out taking anything from this trip to Anfield. Admittedly, the sides haven’t crossed paths often in recent years. But Luton have never once beaten Liverpool at Anfield in a top flight league game.
Perhaps more pertinently, the Reds have lost just one of their last 54 home games in the Premier League. And for all Luton’s character and will to win, they remain in the relegation zone. They’ve lost 14 of the 24 games they’ve played in this campaign.
Still, there’s no doubt Luton are a wild card who might just throw up an improbable result and can clearly contribute to an exciting spectacle.
And Liverpool are without key players like Trent Alexander Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai, Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones and Alisson. What’s more, Mo Salah apparently felt discomfort after the Brentford game; it’s not confirmed whether the striker will be fit for this one.
All things considered, it’s worth at least backing Both Teams To Score at 4/5, given Luton’s impressive ability to give (almost) as good as they get.
With Liverpool weakened by injury, and Luton’s curious habit of performing well against strong sides, it might even be worth trying the double chance Luton or Draw market at 18/5, though the BTTS is obviously the safer option.
