Premier League preview: Man Utd vs Chelsea

Premier League preview: Man Utd vs Chelsea

It’s aafe to say Ralf Rangnick’s Man United experiment hasn’t worked out. With Erik ten Hag due to arrive in the summer, perhaps next season the Manchester side will rediscover some of their former fire.

For now, amidst disarray on the pitch and discontent in the stands, United have plenty of problems. They’ve won just twice in their last eight Premier League games, with three defeats from their last four outings.

Ronaldo has scored hat-tricks in his last two home games

Forget the Red Devils – Chelsea must eye this side the way the Big Bad Wolf views Little Red Riding Hood. But cutting-edge cultural references aside, could it be Cristiano Ronaldo who bares his teeth here?

Ronaldo has hat-tricks from his last two league games played at Old Trafford. He also scored for United against Arsenal at the weekend, in his first game back following personal tragedy.

Rangnick’s team might generally seem to be there for the taking, but their famous striker remains dangerous. And Chelsea have shown a tendency to slip up in recent weeks.

United can certainly be encouraged by their record against this team. The Manchester side are unbeaten in their last eight Premier League meetings with the Blues at Old Trafford. And Chelsea haven’t beaten United in their previous eight league games either, home and away.

Chelsea may be more dangerous on the road

The two sides’ last three meetings have all ended in deadlock though, with a couple of nil-nils last season. Back in November, the game at the Bridge ended 1-1.

Perhaps given their current circumstances Thomas Tuchel’s team are more dangerous on the road than at home. They had to hang on right ‘til the end to break the deadlock against West Ham in West London on Sunday, and before that they were beaten in their own back yard by Arsenal.

But on their recent travels Chelsea have beaten Southampton 6-0, and overcome Real Madrid 3-2 (even if Real won on aggregate). The Blues clearly have a few vulnerabilities at the moment, but they also have a system that generally works, with players who can generally be relied on.

Chelsea are 6/5 to win. Ronaldo is 8/5 to score at any time, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him bag a consolation. Chelsea to win and Both Teams To Score is a 13/4 shot.
