Premier League preview: Saturday’s action including Burnley vs Everton
Bournemouth vs Luton
It’s four wins in five for Andoni Iraola’s Cherries, and the south coast side punched significantly above their weight when they beat Man Utd 3-0 at Old Trafford last weekend.
Now Bournemouth host a Luton side who have put up a decent fight against both Arsenal and Man City in the last few weeks – albeit without taking any points from those matches.
For all that heroic effort, the Hatters remain mired in the bottom three of the league table. And with Bournemouth’s current form, it seems unlikely that the visitors can take anything from a trip to the Vitality.
Bournemouth are not a big price to win this one, then. But you could back Dominic Solanke to find the net for the hosts at evens; the striker has netted three goals in his last two home games, and also scored against Man Utd on Saturday.
Chelsea vs Sheffield United
Chelsea have shown flashes of form without ever looking wholly reliable this season; Sheffield United have looked destined for the drop pretty much since day one.
So no-one should expect the Blades to get anything from their trip to Stamford Bridge. Yet somehow, this game looks more like a potential trap for Mauricio Pochettino than Chris Wilder.
It’s one win in five for the Blues, and the west London side have lost at home plenty of times already this season – including against the struggling Nottingham Forest.
The Sheffield team secured only their second win of the season with victory against Brentford last time; can they possibly frustrate Chelsea on Saturday?
I don’t quite dare suggest the visitors will get something here – but between Wilder’s nous and Poch’s current struggles, the Blades may at least make it tricky for Chelsea.
Raheem Sterling may be the hosts’ best hope, having scored 15 goals in his last 18 appearances against promoted sides. Sterling is 5/4 to score at any time here.
Man City vs Crystal Palace
There’s been some understandable reaction to Man City’s slight lapse in dominance in the last few weeks, but it seems a little premature to suggest the Pep Guardiola era is in serious decline; either way, City’s run of draws at the Etihad can surely end as they welcome Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The Eagles have mustered just four points from their last eight games, scoring eight goals across that run; City have 10 goals from their last three home games.
Anything but a comfortable home win will be hugely unexpected; and City’s continuing ability to rack up the goals, even without Haaland, means backing City and over 3.5 goals could be the way to go here – combine those bets at odds of 27/20. Seven of the last eight league meetings between these sides at the Etihad have featured four or more goals.
Newcastle vs Fulham
Newcastle are facing Fulham at the worst possible time; the Magpies went out of Europe on Wednesday, finishing bottom of their group after losing at St James Park to Milan.
And that’s the Mags’ third consecutive loss across all competitions; on the road, Eddie Howe’s side have been comfortably beaten by Everton and Tottenham in recent weeks.
At home, Newcastle tend to find a way – but they couldn’t do so in the Champions League this week, and they may also struggle against these rampant Cottagers.
Fulham have won both their last two home games 5-0. They scored three goals at Anfield in defeat before that too, and Marco Silva’s side must be full of belief as they face Newcastle.
Fulham are 33/10 to win this one. Against a side that could still be feeling drained after the midweek action, the visitors have a strong chance of maintaining their winning run.
Burnley vs Everton
It’s fair to say both Burnley and their erstwhile manager Sean Dyche have moved on. But while Vincent Kompany’s progressive style gave the Clarets a thrilling time of it in the Championship, how Burnley could use a little of that Dychean grit these days.
True, Burnley’s fortunes have slightly improved in the last few weeks, but prior to a 5-0 win against Sheffield United, the side had lost their previous seven home games in the Prem.
The promoted side are in a struggle to remain in the top flight – and will do well to take anything against Everton this weekend. The Toffees are in fine form, with three wins on the bounce ahead of this match.
They’ve also won their last three away games – and have already turned over Burnley once this season, winning 3-0 in the League Cup last month.
Dyche can take all three points against his old club; back Everton for the win at 21/20.
