Premier League preview: Saturday’s action including Chelsea vs Brentford
Chelsea vs Brentford
The west London derby gets the Premier League action underway this weekend – and the Bees are unbeaten in their last three games against Chelsea, winning on each of their last two visits to Stamford Bridge.
Can Thomas Frank assert dominance over his more glamourous rivals once again? Both sides should be in cautiously optimistic mood for this one.
Brentford ended a six-game winless streak as they eased to a 3-0 victory over Burnley last week.
But it feels like Chelsea are moving in the right direction under Mauricio Pochettino, too. The Blues may have let Arsenal back into the game last weekend, but at least there’s more belief around the side at the moment.
On paper, this one feels like Chelsea should have too much for the visitors then. But Brentford have a proud record to maintain when it comes to London derbies to maintain; they’re unbeaten in the last 12.
Given questions over Chelsea’s on-going fragility at home – they’ve only won one league match at home this season, against Luton back in August – yep, we can see Brentford taking a point here. The draw is a 3/1 shot.
Arsenal vs Sheffield United
Sheffield United’s ongoing search for a first victory in this campaign seems destined to continue this week. The Blades are unlikely candidates to trip up the unbeaten Arsenal.
The Sheffield side has so far taken just one point from their first nine games. If Paul Heckingbottom isn’t already feeling gloomy enough, the only other side in Premier League history to take just a single point from their opening ten games is – Sheffield United, in the 2020-21 season. Precedent set, at least.
The Blades have already shipped a few painful results this season. But Arsenal may be ready to unload on the side after their Champions League exploits this week.
Over 3.5 goals is a 22/25 shot; five of Arsenal’s last seven league games have seen four goals scored.
Bournemouth vs Burnley
In a game that could determine the future for Andoni Iraola, 19th placed Bournemouth host 18th placed Burnley.
Those league positions suggest there’s little between the two sides. But perhaps the visitors can take some inspiration from the knowledge that Burnley have won their last three away games against the Cherries.
The Clarets won against Luton earlier this month too, offering encouragement that Vincent Kompany’s side can hold their own against teams that – like Burnley – aren’t exactly flourishing.
Both these managers are struggling, but Iraola really seems to be on the brink – and Kompany may be able to take advantage. Back the visitors to win at 23/10.
Wolves vs Newcastle
It’s two wins in three games for Wolves; can Gary O’Neil continue to impress against a Newcastle side still smarting from defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League?
Whatever the outcome, Wolves are pretty reliable when it comes to Both Teams To Score. In fact, each of the Old Gold’s last six league matches have seen both sides find the net.
Newcastle have scored in their last three away games in the Prem too, against West Ham, Sheffield United and Brighton. BTTS Yes at 8/11 looks likely; or you could plump for over 3.5 goals at 39/20. After a disappointing midweek for the Magpies, Eddie Howe’s side might be able to shake off that setback with goals at the Molineux.
