Premier League preview: Saturday’s action including Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest
Fulham vs Leeds
Fulham ended a five-game losing streak with their 3-1 win at Goodison Park last weekend. The Cottagers will look to build on that victory against a Leeds side that have gained a reputation as the Prem’s whipping boys in recent weeks.
Javi Gracia’s side have been turned over 4-1, 5-1 and 6-1 in the last month by Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Liverpool – the latter two results coming at Elland Road. The West Yorkshire side are reeling, and Marco Silva’s side have already beaten them twice this season. Fulham to win at 13/10 looks a decent prospect.
Brentford vs Aston Villa
Brentford are winless in five, and face one of the Premier League’s form teams in Aston Villa. The visitors have been transformed under Unai Emery, with seven wins from their last eight.
Villa hammered Newcastle 3-0 last week – that’s the Magpies’ biggest defeat of the season – and Ollie Watkins’ imperious form continues, the 27-year-old bagging a brace against Eddie Howe’s side.
With Villa looking determined to finish the season in style, there’s no reason to believe their fine form can’t continue on Saturday. The visitors are 9/5 to bag three points; Watkins is 17/10 to find the net, as he’s done 11 times in his last 12 matches.
Crystal Palace vs Everton
It’s three wins in three for Roy Hodgson since he took over. You can’t argue with that. If Palace’s new(ish) manager bounce is in full bloom, though, Everton’s own brief renaissance is wilting like an Arsenal title challenge.
Fulham had too much for the Toffees last week. Sean Dyche has shown that his side can hold their own away from Goodison though, with battling draws against Nottingham Forest and Chelsea last month.
Given the teams Everton will be facing in the run-in – Newcastle, Brighton and Man City amongst them – the visitors need a strong showing here. Still, the side are winless in four matches, and may struggle to derail a Palace side newly buoyed by Roy.
With Palace in rude health and Everton desperate for points, perhaps BTTS at 11/10 is a decent shout.
Leicester vs Wolves
No-one expected Leicester to beat Man City at the Etihad. But in fairness, the Foxes did rally in the second half to try and make a game of it.
Can new manager Dean Smith pick up a much-needed win against less lethal opposition on Saturday? Dean’s got his work cut out for him, with Leicester having lost nine of their last 10 games in all competitions.
Meanwhile, Julen Lopetegui’s Wolves have earned points against Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Southampton and Aston Villa on the road in 2023, winning their last two home games as well.
Does Wolves’ superior form trump Smith’s potential to inspire his new players? There’s got to be a fair chance. But let’s park that, and focus on goals; the last three league encounters between these sides at the King Power have all featured one or fewer.
Wolves’ last three games have each seen two or fewer goals, too. And Leicester have failed to score more than a single goal per game in their last 10 matches. Under 2.5 goals at 8/11 could pay off, then.
Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest
By their own standards Liverpool might be having a dire season. But they did stick six past Leeds on Monday and remain a formidable opponent at Anfield.
Forest could be in for a rough go of it here, then. Steve Cooper’s search for a first win since early February is ongoing, and will surely not end on Saturday. It’s true that Forest actually beat Liverpool earlier this season at the City Ground. But less optimistically, the Tricky Trees have just one away win in this campaign.
If Liverpool can build on the way they blew away Leeds, this could be a heavy defeat for the visitors. Over 3.5 goals is a 26/25 shot. Alternatively, maybe Trent Alexander Arnold can add to his recent haul of assists – three in his last two matches. The 24-year-old is 11/5 to provide an assist on Saturday.
