Premier League preview: Saturday’s action including Luton vs Spurs
Luton vs Spurs
Luton have finally won a game in the Premier League, beating Everton last weekend. But the Hatters couldn’t keep the good vibes going at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday, losing to Burnley.
Now they host the resurgent Spurs – so is there any way Rob Edwards’ side can trouble Tottenham?
It would be a surprise. The north London club are unbeaten in eight league games, having won six of those. They’ve also scored at least two goals in each Prem game played under Postecoglou.
Combine Spurs to win and over 2.5 goals in a double at 19/20.
Burnley vs Chelsea
Burnley also got off the mark this week, beating Luton 2-1 on Tuesday night. They face a Chelsea side not renowned for their away form – but the Blues did turn over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday.
It’s probably better not to get carried away after one win. But even if Chelsea still have issues, they should also at least fancy their chances against a Burnley side that haven’t had a great start.
This looks a great opportunity for Poch to string three wins together – and given their scoring rate to date, backing Chelsea to win and under 3.5 goals in a double at 7/5 seems a good approach.
Everton vs Bournemouth
After confidently backing Everton to beat Luton last week – how’d that work out? – this appears to be a case of figuring out which of these sides is the least unreliable.
The Toffees have won once at home in their last nine attempts – but that victory came against Bournemouth, in the last game of the season. Everton have lost all four games at Goodison so far in this campaign.
Still, the Cherries aren’t obvious contenders to add to that inglorious record, having failed to win a league game yet this season.
One player has been pretty reliable for the visitors though, Dominic Solanke having scored three times for Bournemouth so far – including goals against Brighton and Brentford on the road.
Solanke is surely capable of returning to the spotlight here, too; back him at 12/5 to score for Bournemouth.
Fulham vs Sheffield United
Not perhaps the most pulse-racing of encounters on recent evidence; each side has scored just five goals so far in their league games this season, with neither team having found the net in their last two matches.
That might suggest this one could be flat. But there’s also the possibility that when two struggling sides come together, it can all get a bit frantic, each side eager to take advantage against beatable opposition.
That could be the case here, and Both Teams To Score Yes is a 19/20 shot.
Man Utd vs Brentford
Beaten at home in each of their last three outings, Man United’s most recent humbling came in the Champions League, Galatasaray completing a memorable victory over Erik ten Hag’s side on Tuesday.
Thomas Frank should be licking his lips in anticipation for this one then, his team having inflicted a memorable defeat on United last season. Unfortunately, in the here and now Brentford haven’t won since August, the Bees carrying a marked lack of sting in recent games.
With talk that Ten Hag has lost patience in misfiring Marcus Rashford – he’s scored once in nine appearances for United this season – maybe it’s time for Rasmus Hojlund to step up. He scored a brace against Gala midweek, and looks United’s liveliest goal threat right now. Hojlund is 13/8 to find the net.
Crystal Palace vs Nottingham Forest
This is Roy Hodgson’s 400th game as a manager in the Premier League – but can he celebrate with a win? In six previous meetings, Palace have never beaten Forest in the Prem.
The Eagles are also without one of their most useful players, with Eberechi Eze absent with a hamstring injury that’s expected to keep him out for the next six weeks.
It’s not like Forest are exactly indomitable on the road, but they have shown a bit of derring-do – that win against Chelsea, the early two-goal lead against Man Utd.
Steve Cooper to ruin Roy’s party then? There’s a decent chance. Back Forest to win at 49/20.
