Premier League preview: Saturday’s action including West Ham vs Chelsea

West Ham vs Chelsea

Chelsea have won both their away games so far this season – that’s four consecutive wins on the road, going back to the previous campaign.

West Ham have lost their last two at the London stadium too (against Aston Villa and Man City). Against that though, the Irons have a good recent record at home against the Blues, two wins and a draw in their last three meetings.

Still Julen Lopetegui’s players will have their hands full dealing with Cole Palmer, who has four assists already this season – it wouldn’t be any kind of a shock to see him contribute another in this lunchtime kick-off. Back Palmer to provide an assist at 27/10.

Aston Villa vs Wolves

Villa’s fine start to the season continued last weekend, Unai Emery’s team coming back from 2-0 down against Everton to win 3-2.

A real sense of excitement surrounds the Villans – which is not something you can say about Wolves. Gary O’Neil’s side are still looking for their first win of the campaign; it’s difficult to see that win coming at Villa Park.

True, Villa did have to contend with an away trip to Switzerland midweek, winning 3-1 over Young Boys in the Champions League; but Unai Emery’s side are likely to have enough in reserve to see off this current iteration of the Old Gold. Wolves have won one of their last 14 league games.

Villa are understandably short to win, then. Maybe skip that and instead back the no-no-notorious Jhon Duran to find the net; he’s done so in all three of Villa’s league wins this season, despite starting from the bench in each match. Duran is 41/20 to score anytime.

Fulham vs Newcastle

Newcastle are off to their best start to a season in 29 years – despite not playing especially well thus far. Now they face Fulham, a club the Magpies have beaten in each of their last six meetings (all competitions).

Newcastle have also scored 13 goals in that run, conceding just one. It doesn’t look especially rosey for the Cottagers then, and with the visitors 6/4 for victory let’s not overthink this; Newcastle look a good thing to keep that winning run going.

If you want an alternative, it’s Alexander Isak’s birthday on Saturday; the Swedish striker is 6/4 to celebrate with a goal at Craven Cottage. Wait to see if he’s fit to start though – Isak suffered a toe injury earlier this week.

Leicester vs Everton

Neither of these sides have mustered a win yet this season; while Leicester have earned decent draws against Tottenham and Crystal Palace, Everton’s grim league record is played four, lost four – despite being 2-0 up in their last two matches. Oof Madone.

If the Toffees were hoping for respite in the League Cup, guess again; they exited that competition via penalties against Southampton on Tuesday night. Will Sean Dyche’s team be able to put their troubles behind them at the King Power on Saturday?

Given Everton’s terrible start, Dyche would probably take a draw here. And with three of the last five meetings between these sides ending in stalemates, we can see this one finishing the same way. The draw is a 12/5 shot.

Perhaps more excitingly, Jamie Vardy has continued to find the net for the Foxes on their return to the Prem, with goals against Spurs and Palace already. He’s 9/5 to score on Saturday.

Liverpool vs Bournemouth

Arne Slot underwent a reality check against Nottingham Forest, but a victorious trip to the San Siro in the Champions League on Tuesday should have cheered up any Reds left deflated by the Tricky Trees.

Still, the Cherries enjoyed last month’s trip to Merseyside, beating Everton 3-2 in improbable fashion. Liverpool’s iffy performance against Forest can at least give the visitors some small hope of an upset at Anfield.

Much more likely, the hosts will be eager to atone for last week’s unexpected defeat. Bournemouth failed to score against Chelsea last time, and could be shut out again this week; Liverpool to win and BTTS No in a double is available at 13/10.

Southampton vs Ipswich

These two promoted sides are each looking for a first league win of the season, though Ipswich have at least earned a couple of draws in the last few weeks. The clean sheet against Brighton at the Amex last week would have been encouraging for Kieran McKenna too.

Can Saints’ coach Russell Martin take something from the Tractor Boys at St Mary’s? Maybe not. When these sides met in the Championship last season Ipswich were victorious on each occasion.

There’s a sense that the visitors are perhaps better equipped to stick around in the Prem this season, too. Ipswich are worth chancing to win at 9/4.

Spurs vs Brentford

Ange Postecoglou might be a likable enough guy, but on occasion he’s made things a bit tricky for himself in the Tottenham job. Fairly or otherwise he was critiqued for his supposed attitude towards training to defend set-pieces last season; now he’s bullishly declared that he “always” wins a trophy in his second season with a club.

I guess the Spurs coach was just answering a question – still, with his side having won one of their opening four games, it’s not a blistering start to the new campaign. Can the north London team take three points against a Brentford side who have started this campaign in decent nick?

Given the last four matches between these sides have each seen at least four goals scored, I prefer to focus on that. You can back over 3.5 goals at 11/10, which seems pretty fair to me.

Crystal Palace vs Man Utd

Palace are yet to recapture the excellence of last season’s final months; the Eagles are yet to win in the first four matches of this campaign.

Palace have drawn their last two, however; can they nab victory against a Man Utd who always seem to be one bad result away from crisis?

It’s been a pretty good week for Erik ten Hag, with his side winning 3-0 away to Southampton at the weekend, then romping to a 7-0 win over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

Down to earth with a bang at Selhurst Park? Palace won home and away against the Red Devils last season, winning 4-0 at home back in May.

This surely won’t be so one-sided, though. And United’s recent performances might see them gather enough momentum to secure another away win here. United are 11/8 to win.
