Premier League preview: Saturday’s action including Wolves v Liverpool

Newcastle vs Man City

The Magpies were comfortably beaten by Fulham last weekend; Eddie Howe will have to coax a considerably improved performance from his side to best Man City.

The Citizens earned a draw with a last ditch goal from John Stones against Arsenal last week. Meanwhile Erling Haaland, not content with a goal of his own, also threw a ball at a rival player’s head, told Arteta to “stay humble” and generally behaved like an absolute wazzock. In some ways, you have to admire it.

Will Haaland attain maximum wind-up mode once more in this lunchtime kick-off? City won this fixture 3-2 back in January in the last campaign, Oscar Bobb providing the late winner – and City tend to get the better of Newcastle, with eight league wins from their last nine meetings.

That said, City are without Rodri, who has proven so important to the club’s fortunes in recent seasons. The midfielder is likely out for the season after picking up a knee injury against the Gunners last week; will his absence be immediately felt at St James’ Park?

Perhaps, but City’s strength in depth is such that Guardiola’s side are still clear favs to win this one. No surprise, given Newcastle have won just one of their last 33 league games against this side. I guess if you’re an optimist you could say the Mags are due the win.

The bet? You could combine City to win and under 3.5 goals at 17/10. If you want something that favours the hosts, take a chance on Harvey Barnes to score for Newcastle. He’s found the net in his last three games for the Mags, and is 17/4 to score again this week.

Arsenal vs Leicester

The Gunners just couldn’t quite get the job done against City last weekend, but they’ll presumably expect to see off of a Leicester side still looking for a first league win of the season.

The Foxes have three draws and two losses so far, but they’ve conceded in every game. Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka could be worth a look to provide an assist at 11/5 here; he’s already racked up five so far in this campaign.

Brentford vs West Ham

Thomas Frank’s side have won both their home games in the Prem in this campaign, and will hope to keep that run going against a West Ham side that have started disappointingly under Julen Lopetegui.

The Irons were dispatched 3-0 at home to Chelsea last time out; in fairness, they have been better on the road, drawing against Fulham and beating Crystal Palace. Although earlier this week at Anfield, West Ham were battered 5-1 by Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

Lopetegui will obviously be hoping to spark an upturn in fortunes at the Gtech, then. But West Ham’s previous trips to this ground haven’t been especially fruitful. Brentford triumphed 3-2 last season, having won 2-0 in each of the previous two seasons.

And West Ham’s current form is such that it’s easy to fancy the hosts taking all three points here. Brentford are 6/5 for the victory.

Chelsea vs Brighton

There’s a mood of growing optimism around Chelsea after a couple of away wins on the bounce against Bournemouth and West Ham; Enzo Maresca’s side also strolled past Barrow 5-0 midweek in the League Cup.

Can the west London side keep up their winning run against Brighton on Saturday? Though unbeaten in all comps this season, the Seagulls are without a win in their last three, drawing with Arsenal, Ipswich and Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are looking for their first home win of the league campaign – and though Brighton are a fine side, the Blues beat them home and away last season, despite suffering a sending-off in each match.

Danny Welbeck has three goals already in this campaign – and a strong recent record against this opposition too. He may be able to find the net once again this week; Welbeck is 29/10 to score.

Everton vs Crystal Palace

Everton supporters might have had some rare cause for cheer this week with the news that the Friedkin Group are set to buy the club.

Less happily, the Toffees have lost their first four league games of the season, though they did earn a point away against Leicester last time out.

Still, with talk that Sean Dyche could be heading for the exit if results don’t improve, will the hosts finally clinch that first win of the campaign against Crystal Palace?

The Eagles are also winless in their first five games of the season, though they’ve earned draws in their last three outings, taking points from Chelsea and Man Utd.

These sides met four times last season, with Palace failing to win any of those meetings (Everton won twice). A good omen for the hosts? Maybe, but the side have blundered on enough occasions already this season to make me wary.

So good for Palace in the second half of last season, Jean-Philippe Mateta has scored four goals already this season (two against Norwich in the League Cup). He may shine for Palace again this week; Mateta is 5/2 to score.

Nottingham Forest vs Fulham

Forest have already beaten Liverpool at Anfield, and they frustrated Brighton at the Amex last week. But they’re still waiting for a first home win of the season – can they take victory this week against Fulham?

Marco Silva’s side haven’t lost since the opening day of the season – a 1-0 defeat away to Man Utd – and they eased to comfortable victory at home against Newcastle last time out.

The west London side have a decent record against Forest too, winning at the City Ground in four of their last five visits, dating back to 2017. The Cottagers lost 3-1 last time the teams met here though, back in April.

Chris Wood has scored in each of his last two home games for Forest – and he found the net against Brighton last time out, too. The New Zealand striker is 6/1 to open the scoring, as he did in each of those three previous games.

Wolves vs Liverpool

Wolves’ dismal start to the season seems unlikely to come to an end against Liverpool. Gary O’Neil’s side have lost four of their five games to date, while the Merseyside team have won four of their opening five.

It’s not like Wolves have a good track record against the Merseyside team either; Liverpool have won 14 of the last 15 league meetings between the two sides. Ulp.

Wolves were turned over 6-2 by Chelsea back in August; could another painful scoreline for the hosts be on the cards here? Liverpool to win and over 3.5 goals is a 7/5 shot.
