Premier League preview: Sunday’s action
Liverpool vs Brentford
Liverpool are going through a bit of a dicey period. Klopp’s side failed to score past 10-man Arsenal earlier this week, and are without a win in their last three league games, too.
But Brentford have lost three of their last Premier League outings, getting smashed 4-1 by Southampton at St Mary’s last time out. Just the kind of team Jurgen should be rubbing his hands with glee to play then, no?
Well, except that the West London side have already held Liverpool to a 3-3 draw back in September, which perhaps give Thomas Frank at least a glimmer of hope here.
Liverpool are without Salah and Mane, too, with both men otherwise occupied in the Africa Cup of Nations. But even if Salah’s understudy Minamino displayed some quite catastrophic finishing earlier this week, Diogo Jota may be able to bring the Bees to their knees.
Jota may have drawn blanks in his last three outings, but he’s scored six goals in his last nine league appearances for the Reds – with four goals in his last four league appearances at Anfield.
With few other options for Liverpool, Jota will surely get most of the chances here. He’s 7/2 to open the scoring, 49/50 to score at any time – and you can back Jota to score and Liverpool to win at 6/5.
West Ham vs Leeds United
The Irons are on a four-game winning streak in all comps, and knocked Leeds out of the FA Cup last weekend. Marcelo Bielsa’s team did win against Burnley at the start of the year, but in general Leeds’ second season back in the Prem continues to underwhelm.
David Moyes’ side has won all three of their meetings with the West Yorkshire side in the 18 months too. So it’s tough to make a case for the visitors having any joy against a West Ham side who are currently fourth in the Premier League, and fighting to stay there.
West Ham’s odds of 8/13 to win won’t set many pulses racing, however. Maybe it’s worth seeing if Jarrod Bowen can keep a good thing going instead; the 25-year-old scored against Leeds in that Cup game, then bagged a brace against Norwich on Wednesday. When you’re hot you’re hot, and Bowen is 11/5 to score at any time here.
Tottenham vs Arsenal
This match is apparently at risk of being postponed, but assuming it does go ahead, it’s tricky to call since both sides have the potential to let you down.
On Thursday Arsenal at least kept a clean sheet against Liverpool despite Granit Xhaka’s sending off, earning a draw; they’d lost their last two before that, to Man City and Nottingham Forest.
Spurs haven’t lost in the league since Antonio Conte’s arrival, but the Italian has looked a little put upon of late, and his team didn’t put up much of a fight against Chelsea in either leg of the League Cup.
With both sides depleted of players and desperate not to cede ground in the hunt for a fourth place finish, this could end up with both sides settling for a point. The draw is a 9/4 shot.
