Premier League preview: Sunday’s action including Arsenal vs Man Utd

Wolves fired five goals past Blackpool in the League Cup on Wednesday night, while Palace scored four in their win over Plymouth in the same competition. But in the Prem, neither of these sides have been exactly free-scoring.
And with both sides reasonably adept at keeping goals out, this one probably won’t be a blood-and-thunder affair. Still, I think the visitors may be able to get something here, so the Wolves or Draw double chance bet at 19/20 is worth a try.
Liverpool vs Aston Villa
Following Liverpool’s heroic win over Newcastle last week, despite Virgil van Dijk having been sent off less than half an hour into the action, there’s a sense of positivity around the Merseyside team right now. Er, elephant-in-the-room transfer talk aside, of course.
At Anfield, Liverpool remain a very difficult team to get the better of. Still, Jurgen Klopp’s 300th league game with the Reds may not go according to plan on Sunday.
Liverpool will be without Van Dijk, and the side are definitely capable of defensive sloppiness at times.
And Villa are full of confidence after a dispiriting start to the season; since the opening day loss to Newcastle, they’ve scored 15 goals in four games in all comps, conceding just once.
Sure, Liverpool offer a much sterner task than Hibs in the Europa Conference League. But Villa look a seriously good side under a smart manager who can mastermind big results.
Unai Emery’s side held Liverpool to a draw here at the end of last season, and will be hopeful of taking something from this encounter too. They could be worth a punt in the Double Chance Win or Draw market at 11/8.
Arsenal vs Man Utd
Neither of these sides have looked exactly imperious in the early weeks of this campaign. The Gunners had to settle for a point against Fulham at the Emirates last week, while Man Utd have already lost on one trip to north London in the last few weeks.
United were also two goals down after four minutes against Forest last time out, though they fought back to secure three points at Old Trafford.
Still, home comebacks are one thing – but United don’t always travel so well. Certainly not when it comes to trips to London. The side have won just one of their last 10 top flight visits to the capital; meanwhile Arsenal are unbeaten in their last five home games against Man Utd, winning four of those.
Live by the stats, die by the stats; we’re reasonably confident this will be another home win for Senor Arteta and co. Sadly, the traders are also reasonably confident this will be another home win for Senor Arteta and co. How terrible is wisdom when it brings no profit to the wise.
If you want a bet with slightly more juice, how about that old favourite, over 3.5 goals. It pays out at 11/8, would have succeeded in the last four encounters between these sides, and even makes a virtue of the knowledge that the Gunners often struggle to keep a clean sheet.
