Premier League preview: Sunday’s action including Chelsea vs Man City
Brentford vs Crystal Palace
Brentford didn’t have a great season last time out. Crystal Palace looked a team reborn once Oliver Glasner took charge back in February.
Palace have had to sell Michael Olise in the off-season, but there remains a good vibe around the side currently.
And there’s still quality in this team; Jean-Philippe Mateta was a player transformed under Glasner, scoring 13 goals in his last 13 appearances for Palace.
Mateta signed off with a hat-trick against Aston Villa – and maintained his fine form with five goals for France at the Olympics this summer. He’s 12/5 to find the net against the Bees.
Chelsea vs Man City
Feels like the vibe around Man City at the moment is slightly muted; perhaps that’s because anyone who isn’t a City fan is heartily sick of them winning, or perhaps it has more to do with the sense that coach Pep Guardiola and the outstanding Kevin De Bruyne are likely to depart at the end of the season.
Or maybe it’s the fact that City’s day of reckoning is approaching; the hearing over the club’s 115 alleged Premier League rule breaches begins on the 16th of September.
Despite those various reasons for ennui, City still look to be in decent shape as the club prepare to try and win the Premier League title for a fifth consecutive season.
In a searing flash of insight, I reckon Guardiola’s side will be there or thereabouts again this season. Assuming they don’t incur a huge points penalty next month, of course.
Chelsea’s bid to escape the chaos of their own making may not materialise any time soon. The Blues sacked Mauricio Pochettino at the end of last season when things had seemed to be clicking.
Leicester coach Enzo Maresca has come in for Poch; under the new boss, Chelsea have taken beatings aplenty (including against City) in pre-season friendlies. Meanwhile, Maresca has reportedly said that last season’s standout player Cole Palmer may need to show more discipline in the new set-up.
There’s a few reasons to feel a bit disconcerted if you’re a Blues fan, then. But Chelsea did at least fare reasonably well against City last season, drawing home and away in the Prem – 1-1 at the Etihad, 4-4 at Stamford Bridge back in November.
Still, with Chelsea seemingly still trying to figure things out and their opposition likely to make the most of any weakness, it’s hard not to fancy the visitors. City to win and over 2.5 goals in a double is available at 11/8.
