Premier League preview: Sunday’s action including Everton vs Arsenal
Bournemouth vs Chelsea
Not to be unkind, but for the more established teams Dean Court isn’t the toughest place to go. Last season the Cherries lost at home to Arsenal, Tottenham, Man City, Chelsea and Man Utd. In this campaign they’ve already lost to Spurs.
But Chelsea remain – euphemism alert – a work in progress. Nottingham Forest beat them at Stamford Bridge before the break. Five of their last six away games have ended in defeat. The only team they’ve beaten on the road in that run is – you guessed it – Bournemouth.
In fact, the Cherries haven’t won a league game since that defeat. Still, such is Chelsea’s capacity for calamity at the moment, it feels almost remiss not to take them on; Bournemouth or the draw in the Double Chance market is a 27/25 shot.
Even if you think the visitors can’t keep getting it wrong, this stat should give you pause for a moment of reflection; dating back to his Tottenham days, Pochettino has failed to win any of his last 13 away games in the Prem.
Bournemouth’s likeliest source of goals remains Dominic Solanke; the striker is 21/10 to find the net.
Everton vs Arsenal
Last time the Gunners journeyed to Goodison Park, the newly arrived Sean Dyche oversaw a textbook 1-0 win – the Toffees’ first, following an eight-game winless stretch.
With 777 Partners seemingly set to buy the club, another new era is apparently about to begin for Everton. For good or bad.
While this would be the investment company’s first foray into the Premier League, 777 have purchased other football clubs in recent years. One of those sides, Hertha Berlin, was relegated from the Bundesliga last season. Meanwhile, fans of other 777-owned clubs like Standard Liege have criticised a perceived lack of investment.
That doesn’t bode especially well for Everton, who have looked pretty shaky so far in the new campaign, even if they earned their first point with a draw against Sheffield United last time out.
Arsenal should offer a greater threat, and Mikel Arteta’s side are yet to lose so far this season, even if they haven’t been entirely convincing.
But Arsenal have a terrible recent record at Goodison. These have hardly been vintage years for Everton, but the Merseyside team are nonetheless unbeaten in their last five home meetings with the Gunners, winning four of those.
As they say in financial circles, past performance is not indicative of future results. Still, with Arsenal having failed to do the business in their last five attempts here, it’s difficult to recommend backing the visitors, given the odds-on price.
Maybe Everton’s new signing Beto can become an instant hero in his first home match. He’s played twice for the Toffees so far, scoring against Doncaster on his debut in the League Cup. Now the Portuguese striker may be able to make an instant impact against loftier opposition; Beto is 16/5 to score at any time.
